Why don't we make a thread like a hack-wishlist where people can offer bouties for certain hacking achievements, which should give hackers that ussually would cancel a hack an additional reason to continue. To ensure the bounties the people set there could be made a pot-like system where all people who set a bounty on the same thing can put money in and which is being looked after by a trustworthy person. This trustworthy person, who took care of the money would then have to give the bounty to the one achieving the goal. The place where the money is kept could for example be a money-bookers account, which was just created for this sole purpose. The account details would after a hacker achieved what the bounty was set out for receive the account details and thus the money in it.
Do you think its a good idea that might prevent cancellations and similiar.
Discuss!

This reminds me of a similar idea that was voiced as an alternative model for financing software development in the eye of uncontainable piracy somewhere at some point. However, the problems I see with are that
- neither many people would be willing to pay for ROM hacks
- nor would many hackers like to work for money, let alone see the whole scene commercialized
- since ROM hacking is already very much of a grey area business, taking money into the equation would make the whole thing several shades of grey darker
.

Interesting idea, but no.

- People do hobbies because they're fun, not because they're obligated/paid.
- Something tells me that we wouldn't get enough money to provide any incentive anyways.
- Legal issues, as bh89 pointed out.
- I wouldn't trust the site administration with a dime.

Its not like a payment it would more be like a donation kind of like a piece of sugar to make the success even sweeter. it would also kind of act like a way to make decisions easier for a romhacker i know romhacking is fun but sometimes u cannot decide what to hack and then if you ahh on this one of my ideas there is a bounty set on lets do it . this will channel development in the right directions.

People don't hack roms to make hacks that you want to see. They usually do it for themselves.

You're making the fatal flaw of assuming that ROM hacks are all controlled and distributed by a single vendor.

(This is very similar to a logical fallacy when people argue that all "those Linux guys" need to do is reduce the number of distributions, desktop environments, web browsers, etc)

You're making a fatal mistake and are totally misunderstanding my post. Perhaps u did not see that i wrote this would mostly apply to hacks that would otherwise be stopped or to people, who cannot decide which hack to do. Or even people who in fact want to hack but normally are too lazy to start their hacks because they do some senseless surfing all day and then the end of the day realize they achieved nothing. Sometimes people want to do stuff but for some mysterious reason don't start it. One little push in the right direction might change it though. Most people should then be happy about achieving something instead of wasting their time. If you think I am talking total bullshit I can assure you it is not since I myself suffer from the same kind of problems and I do know a lot of people who do, too.

If a someone really wants to make a ROM hack, they will. If they don't finish, they shouldn't be forced, or as you basically are doing, bribed into finishing it. Not only would that rid any quality than if the creator willingly done it themselves, it only serves the purpose to get you the hacks you want.

The biggest fatal flaw yet?

You'll be hard-pressed to find someone willing to donate money toward a hack.

Funny, it works with every other game making hobby. Your arguments about making it several shades of grey darker doesn't hold any water.

In my opinion, it wouldn't work because the romhacking community sucks.

If it sucks so much, why did you reply to this thread?

I don't need money incentive to make great software, especially for ROM Hacking, which I see strictly as a hobby. What I do need is free time and motivation, which itself stems from either a lack of something for a specific game or because I have a great idea and I want to see it take life. The challenge of good ASM hacks is also quite appealing. Of course, hacking a game I like helps a lot, obviously...

What happens if money is brought into the equation can be meticulously observed in the rare cartridge hoarding/dumping/exchanging scene. (Ever seen the "Bio Force Ape" hoax thread? At some point, everybody in there seemed like they would be ready to slash each other's throats should one cross the other's road in real life)

If such an approach ever became observable, we'd see the inevitable reverse of hack authors saying they won't continue unless they are paid some money, leading up to impressive-looking hacks being started with the sole purpose of demanding money for their completion, leading up to a horrible, horrible sea of GOLDSPLZ that warez kiddies keep pouring into looking for a quick buck one after the other.

If something sucks, and it currently sucks because it has nothing going for it anyway, why shoot the idea down? First you've got the ROM-Hacking community, then you've got the ROM-Hacking community with this idea. It's now more than it was before, and not less because the idea doesn't detract from the community if you just decide to steer clear from it.

I find it somewhat similar to this board in terms of its features...
