yeah this is bugging the crap out of me.

the avatars i make are usually 37kb and the limit is 30kb.

why such a low maximum? and can it be increased by say, 10kb?

The limit was originally 20k

30k should be well enough for 100x100 unless it's animated, so just resize them first

Even a 100x100 24-bit BMP is only 29.3 KB. I wonder why Photoshop's images are bigger.

Consider using PNG instead.

Or JPG at a less extreme quality ... it really shouldn't be bigger than BMP (or even PNG, to be worth using)

BMPs in the internet are like blue whales in the street.
PNGs or GIFs, and if you want to be extreeem, try JPEG with maximum compression.

Hey, at least they don't have to be exactly 60 pixels wide anymore. The old 60-pixel limit would make a lot of freely available avatars off limits. Not everyone can draw their own.

Hey, I -LIVE- off of 60x60 avatars ;(

Though, I admit the 60px limit was a little silly. Most sites have 100px limits

I have a 64x64 avatar, that is about 1.2 KB

I generally try not to go over 64x64...

Mine is a moving gif pictures and gifs aren´t known for good quality.

I choose 100x100 if I`m able to.

I tend to use 64x64, and crop or expand for websites that have different limits. ie. this one was 64x64, but meant to be viewed at 2x, so I had to crop around it abit.
