One of the first ROM hacking sites I found, probably while searching on the net about emulation.

Heh, I found it even before Acmlm board itself was actually created.

On a spurt, I was trying to learn how to hack Pokémon games on a small burst of nostalgia. A buddy of mine, Mustapha, pointed me here. Suffice to say, I never learned how, but I stuck around, so... =P

This happened in around May 2005. I'm not really an oldbie here by any means.

Let's see, I found it through this place called Lemmy's Land (A Mario/Koopaling fansite). Some guy there announced an SMW hack he'd made, and linked to a thread he'd made about it on the original Acmlm's (this was in late 2002). I got curious and obtained my own copy of Lunar Magic. Eventually I joined the board at the very end of the year because I had a question.

A friend once showed me to Ogre's acmlmboard when it was still up, and eventually I browsed through the affiliates links and found my way back to the main one. I dunno about exact details, this was at least 4 years ago.

I actually knew of Ace's ROM Hack Domain around '00 and '01. I would've never registered if Ace updated his damned Strange Mario Bros. table and answered his damn email.

And he probably still hasn't answered and it was over six years ago!

I found it a while after starting to hack ROMs, last year... was looking for some location data or a place to start for hacking the original Baseball Stars and the mystical Google directed me to the board.

I've completely forgotten about how I originally found it.
3rd incarnation: Poked around a bit and spotted the new incarnation. Once again, kinda forgot.
Acmlm II: IRC, like everyone else. :p

Via an EGM article, which lead to Challenge Games, which lead to Acmlm's ROM hacking domain.

Acmlm actually had the article uploaded somewhere, too...

A friend at school introduced me to Romhacking way back in the days when Super Mario with a Penis for a Head Bros was the norm, and since I thought that the only things you could change in a rom was graphics and text, I tried googling for "final fantasy rom hack", and somehow stumbled across Acmlm's Rom Hack Domain prior to the first incarnation of the board. The site had a pretty impressive library of rom hacks more advanced than the crap I had been introduced to, so I stuck around, and visited the site about once every day to check if there had been an update. One day the board appeared, so I registered the first day, and has been around ever since. Yay.

As for this board, given that I registered before even Milly, it should be pretty obvious how I knew about it.

I was looking for ROM hacks to play because all of my old games were starting to get boring. It was the middle of summer 2005 and I had nothing better to do. Using Google brought me to Acmlm's and I joined just to ask how to use those ips files.

I never did see myself still here after nearly 2 years. I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

Incarnation 1:

Long, long ago... Before your sun burned hot in space, and before your race was born... In the year 2001, I was searching for SMB hacks. I had been aware of emulation and, to a lesser degree, rom hacks for some time. But I had some trouble finding good ones (due partly to my search engine of choice at the time being Ask Jeeves ). Finally, I found Acmlm's Rom Hack Domain. It was a nice site, and I checked it now and then for updates. Then, on June 13th, I noticed the message board. I had never really been a member of a message board until then, sticking mainly to AOL's chat rooms, but I figured "What the heck, I might as well register!" At the time I was spending the summer at my Grandmother's house, and my family was in the process of moving from Chickasha to Ada. In a thread about Bouche's plans to remake Strange Mario Bros as a SMBDX hack, I made my first and most legendary post:

[green]i'll make a smbdx hack as soon as i get my comp hooked up again[/green]

By my ninth post I was already making rom requests (for SMBDX) and had found myself a lengthy block of text to use in my sig.

Eventually I stole the code to Acmlm's sig and edited it, and thus learned to code tables in HTML, which would become helpful in my future status of post layout master... At least until Jesper came along and introduced CSS into the mix, but that's another story for another time. I'm getting off track, it's time to move on.

Incarnation 2:

I migrated when incarnation 1 died. There was much at the loss of SF threads, but I got over it.

Incarnation 3:

See incarnation 2.

Board II:

A wizard did it.

I found it by knowing a friend (Chaos Force) when he had it up daily and I finally decided to register. This is my 4th year I think at Acmlm's.

I was searching "SM64 editor" on google and ended up in the SM64 thread. Like a few others I used google to find the board for the first few weeks. I lurked for about a month until finally I posted in SM64 branding me forever as one of "them" who drove out VL-Tone... But then I realized how shity the thread was becoming so I went on to post in the rest of the forum. I eventually went back to romhacking after getting the idea from Elobelo (never did show his face much after that) to make Halo NES. The board is now going through its apocalypse and I was one of the few who found the lifeboat off it. And now I'm here posting on Board II... And he lived happily ever after. The End.

V 1.92 or something like that. (Old Board)
Got hooked on ROMs thanks to one of my brother's friends, then got hooked on the hacks for Super Mario World. Bam, found SMW Hacking...in the Total Crap area.

V 2 (This Blue Board)
Missed the IRC, unlike other people. So I went thread-hopping. Found a link to here in the Display Case.

1st Post is about the simple Why-You-Know-About-_____-And-How thing. Bah.

The year was 2004. There I was, with my associates, smoking a joint like we usually did every Thursday night. Suddenly gunshots rang out through the night, accompanied by a familiar scream. We ran outside, just in time to see Lil Joe collapse on the ground, and a dark red car speeding away from the scene. He had been shot multiple times. We knew this was the work of a rival gang. And we knew what it meant. A bloody turf war was about to take place.

The specifics were later handed to us by a uniformed member of their gang. We were shocked. It would be a battle of honor. No weapons, no vehicles. Just fists. It would take place on Wednesday, at 2:00AM sharp, in the old lot behind the junkyard. At this point, I wasn't a very good fighter. Big Papa offered to teach me some moves, but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I was beginning to lose hope, when I remembered something. My best friend was kidnapped, violated, and murdered at the age of 12. I was present at the time of the kidnapping, and even had a knife on me at the time. I could've quite easily overpowered the man, but instead, I dove for cover. It was my fault that he died that day. I was not about to allow the same thing to happen again. Confidence regained, I worked hard, and in just a few short days, I was quite adept at hand to hand combat.

Wednesday morning. 1:55AM. There I was, standing with my homies in the middle of the lot. The night was hot and humid. The suspense was unbearable. I was ready to kick some ass.

Suddenly, we saw headlights approaching. It was them. They emerged from their vehicles in groups of four. We stared each other down for what seemed like forever. Our numbers were equal. After about a minute or so, one of their goons made the first move. He screamed out a war cry as he ran forward towards Marvin, arm outstretched. Luckily, my homie grabbed his arm, gave it a twist, and shoved the enemy gang member to the ground. The war had begun. We fought hard against the seemingly tireless members of our rival gang. While they were weak, they just didn't want to stay down. Soon, reinforcements arrived for their gang. These guys were more built than the first wave, and were thus tougher. We still managed to hold our ground while keeping losses to a minimum, though. Suddenly, a loud cry of pain pierced the air. I looked to my left to see one of the opposing gang members plunging a knife into Big Papa's body. "Cheating bastards." I thought to myself, although in the back of my mind, I knew this was bound to happen. Nevertheless, I ran over to the guy with the knife and kicked it out of his grasp with surprising precision. He was about to make a lunge for me when I grabbed him and threw him to the ground. I retrieved the knife and threw it with all my might into the junkyard nearby. It landed within the boundry of it. I was then tackled from behind by another gang member. I got up and stared menacingly into his eyes for a moment before we engaged in a brawl with each other. This was turning out to be more difficult than I thought.

Suddenly, a vehicle sped into the war zone, stopping in the middle of the chaos. I realized what was coming, but no one else seemed to. I knew could only save myself. Knocking down the guy I was in a struggle with with a powerful elbow to the throat, I got out of there like all of hell was after me. I barely managed to get out of the blast radius as the car exploded in a magnificent explosion that lit up the night sky. I looked back at the battlefield, and knew that there were no survivors.

Saddened by this senseless loss, I moped back to the hideout. When I arrived, though, something was amiss. It looked as though the place had been ramsacked! I noticed a faint glow coming from one of the rooms. I stealthily snuck up to it and peered inside. Sitting there, was a lone member of the opposing gang. I wondered what the hell he was doing in the enemy gang's hideout, and furthermore, why he was slacking off in it. At any rate, I snuck up behind him, pulled out my switchblade, and covered his mouth as I slit his throat. Moving the dead corpse aside, I looked to the computer screen to see just what he was looking at. While I expected something of the pornographic nature, I saw something different. A logo of a website stared back at me, and proclaimed the following...

Acmlm's Board
"Live the Fun Posting Experience"

I was immediately hooked.

Hmm, I got into watching Speedruns at one point, and while searching for some I came across tasvideos.org. I saw they had a TAS of SDW: TLC up and until that point I didn't even know hacks like that existed! So of course once I knew a Super Mario World hack existed I had to play it. Super Mario World is one of the signature games of my childhood and the idea of being able to play a new version sounded so cool. So I soon learned about emulation, found out there were TONS of Mario Hacks, found Zophars and downloaded everything I needed to play. Then I found FuSoYa's Niche, downloaded SDW: TLC played it and loved it, and soon started downloading other hacks from Zophars not knowing they were all extremely outdated, this was around mid 2005. I noticed a lot of the hacks referenced ACMLMs board either on their site or in the game credits so I figured I should check it out and see if I could find more hacks there. I came here, and have been addicted ever since, although I'm still mainly a lurker and rarely post.

As for this incarnation, I was reading through all the threads relating to the whole incident, and one of the ones in the pit of despair contained a link here. I was very happy to see the new board! I knew the old one would turn to shit without Xkeeper and Ace around, and I never liked ||bass much anyway, especially now. I figured a new board would be set up eventually but I was getting a little worried as to when. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised, left the old, and joined the new in a heartbeat <3
