Near and Mello, in the end, caught Light. This was not something any of the three could have done on their own. I found Near's interactions with Light to be the most entertaining. After all, if L's so smart, why is he dead?

However, L knew he was going to die. That's why he set the timer. He also said, that if Light became L, then Light was Kira.
He knew Light would become L, therefore, he knew Light was Kira.

Also, did Near ever get in a physical fight with Light? I don't think so.
