Specifically uTorrent, but it's really more general than just the program itself.
Anyway, here's the question: is there any significant difference in, well... anything, if I have uTorrent preallocate the HD space for the files? Will I notice the difference (if any), or no? ____________________ |

Depends, but generally preallocation is to allocate all necessary space for the download before you actually get the data. It generally makes disk operations far faster as you don't need to allocate on the fly. Depending on your download speed and how fragmented your filesystem is, you may or may not actually notice a difference.
(Preallocation is also the same thing most DVR programs (eg, MythTV) use to make recording and seeking in live TV seem instantaneous) |

In other words, it will not make your downloads faster significantly, if faster at all. It may make a difference if your are downloading on a corporate/university connection (10Mbps+), but a 6Mbps or less won't do anything. The only thing it assures you is that you will have enough space to finish your download and avoid the "Out of [HD space]" errors. |
