Freeciv, which is a Civ 2 clone (and of course, free. Thing is, the games take a long time).

OpenTTD (Needs a few files, but it can be set up as a tournament game fairly well)
Freeciv is ironically one of the faster Civilization games I played. Mostly because of the missing eyecandy and streamlined technology tree (which I almost start climbing too fast at some point).

OpenTTD is not that good for competition, at least by default. If you were playing with more expensive stuff, and with patches to decrease the timescale a bit (so it takes longer to pay off expenseses/income) then perhaps. (A common problem is that you have more money than you can get ride of at a certain point in the game).

We would just be playing on shoddy anyway.

Which is why I thought about writing a patch that makes it take longer time to gain income/expenses. It won't make the game harder, just slow down it economically. To make up for it, I would make each day to take longer. The trains will be as fast, so don't worry about watching them go along at a snailpace.

...that would also allow one to be AFK for long periods of time, and just build in spurts than being there constantly. So there's more planning than rushing.

There's also Civ IV, which I really prefer over Freeciv/Civ II. However it's ruleset is... very different.

So can we settle on the first game already? I still say AoEII.

I suppose the first game will be AoE2. After that I suppose we could do Warcraft III, or possibly starcraft, cause those are as equally as good / better.

While browsing for a suitable download, I found one perfect for this occasion.
AoE2 Installer
It's a 107MB Download (which took me about 10 minutes to download), has none of the campaign videos / intro videos, or any music. Networking works apparently, but I'll have to try it with someone to be entirely sure.

If you're going to participate, please say if you are either here (prefered), in IRC or in PM if you really feel the need too. Once we have enough people for a 1 v 1 tournament, and possibly a team tournament, I'll put everyones name into a random set generator I wrote for lulz and that will decide the matches.

Before the tournaments, I want to arrange with ailure for him to set up games which anyone can join in order to practice or whatever, that way no one isn't going to be terrible Of course, you guys can always play against CPU.

Why would you do another RTS second? Clearly the top choice for the second pick is Pokemon.

Except pokemon can be cheated, especially on shoddy where people won't be honest and make their pokemans imba

Shoddy won't actually let you do anything that's not possible in real life without cheat devices. It'll give you a "You should probably fix the following things because they're not possible" message when saving your team, and it won't let you battle. As long as you use a competent clause list/banlist there's not really a problem.
