What I was thinking sometime, we could arrange weekly/monthly/whatever tournaments for games every now and again to spice things up around here. It would be great because we can brag about how good we are then get shitted on thoroughly it can bring more life around here (and more fun in IRC instead of the rohmacking talk)

If this is going to happen, we should probably choose a game that everyone would be able to play / are able too play, or a game that doesn't have that much of a difficulty curve. The games will be either PC games or SNES games, or if anyone has a better suggestion, they can post it here. (Only reason not using PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii etc is because some/most people might not have one of them)

Now that that's out of the way:

I think a nice way to start it off would be with a RTS, since RTS's in general aren't too challenging; you can still do good against an experienced player with just playing a few games of it.

If you can, post game ideas (something that everyone could be able to play, either just for this or that we could do in the future) and we could probably decide on something. This would run a lot better if you said it in IRC though, so

My suggestion is going to be one of the age of empires series, or Warcraft III. Both brilliant games that don't take too much skill to get good at, and I'm certain a few of us already have these

Also: thoughts about having board2 tournaments? Just trying something different, and I think this could be fun if we execute it properly.

Eh. I'd rather play Herzog Zwei or Starcraft if we're starting with an RTS.

Well, the only reasons I choose AoE is because some of us already have it and arbe suggested it. It depends on what other people suggest as well.

Hm, how about Red Alert 3? People might need to get into it first with new weapons and whatnot. I haven't played C&C series in a while.

Maybe we should get some basic info on what the average computer specs of board2 is (or at least, the people that post ) so we know what games can be played.

Okay, how about this:

We (Omi) list all the games the it is feasible we should use in the tournament, and the minimum specs required to use them.

Go, Omi, go!

I don't see why you couldn't contribute But let's see..

Age of Empires II
# Multimedia PC with Pentium 166MHz or higher processor.
# 32 MB of RAM
# 200 MB of hard disk space; additional 100 MB of hard disk space for swap file.

That's all it says for that Simple to run, great gameplay etc.

Starcraft II

Minimum Requirements
GFX: GeForce 7/8 Series or Radeon 1000/2000 with 256 MB RAM
CPU: Pentium 4
RAM: 1 GB
Internet: ADSL 1 Mbit

Recommended Requirements
GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM
CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2.
RAM: 2 GB
Internet: ADSL 3 Mbit

Optimal Requirements
GFX: Geforce 9000er or Radeon 3000er Series
CPU: Core 2 Duo 3 GHz or Athlon X2
RAM: 2GB with DualChannel mode

If we are to play that, I'm pretty sure I won't be able too I just meet the minimum requirements. Heard nothing but good things about this game, so eh.

Red Alert 3

# OS – Windows XP / Vista (32-Bit)
# Processor – XP: 2.0 GHz (Intel Pentium 4; AMD Athlon 2000+; Multiple Cores) / Vista: 2.2 GHz (Intel Pentium 4/AMD Athlon 2200+/Multiple Cores)
# Memory – XP/Vista: 1 GB
# Hard Drive – Media: 6.0 GB / EA Link: 12.0 GB
# Video Card – NVIDIA GeForce 6800, ATI Radeon X1800 or higher end DirectX 9.0c compatible gfx card

Tried this yesterday, it's actually really fun It's difficult to get into if you've never played C&C before though.

Don't know any of the system specs needed, but here's a few:

CnC Red Alert, CnC Tiberian Dawn, both released for free on the EA Website. Old, but still decent games.

Freeciv, which is a Civ 2 clone (and of course, free. Thing is, the games take a long time).

OpenTTD (Needs a few files, but it can be set up as a tournament game fairly well)

Herzog Zwei is a Genesis/Mega Drive game, and I'm sure that we all have computers capable of running a suitable emulator.

My only objection to this is Ailure.

I'm pretty sure AoE is the game most people can get the easiest. So let's go with that.

Go, Omi, Go!

Hm. What about Red Alert 2? Is that one free? Most should be able to run it, though.

My machine can run everything so don't worry about that.

Last I checked, RA2 hadn't been (legally) released for free by EA yet.

Hm. Not hard to get it for "free", anyway.

Edit: I totally forgot about Warcraft 3. What game mode were you thinking about, Omi? My favorite is probably TD.

Not a fan of Tower Defense maps myself, and I always build my bases slowly in most RTSes... Still, it would be nice to play WC3, I even have it and it's expansion handy.

WC3
------
Recommended:
600 MHz processor
256 MB of RAM
32 MB 3D video card
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card (Windows)

Minimum:
400 MHz processor
128 MB of RAM
8 MB 3D video card
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card (Windows)

Both require 1.3 GB space
Doesn't work on NT
Requires coaxing to work on Vista.

Starcraft 1 (Brood War (love those Dark Archons!)) would be nice too

SC
------
Minimum (Also recommended)

Windows 95 or better
90 MHz Pentium
16 MB RAM
DirectX-compatible
2x CD-ROM drive

Everyone should be able to manage that by now, and all Brood War needs on top of that is Starcraft installed.

Of course, I'm lacking a working CD key for it at the moment.

Battle for Wesnoth is fun and free, and it should run on just about any computer you have.

Running the program in Windows 98/ME mode, it'll occasionally take more than 1 try too.

Does everyone have that then? I haven't played it in months so I might be a bit rusty, though.
