For those of you with no historical knowledge of the last 100 years

I'm usually against celebrating things like this, but I'm in a good mood. Did anyone here have relatives that died in the war? Do you think there's a point in discussing it?

I don't have anyone that died in the war, and while I'm grateful, I see plenty of these pricks who *drive cars* after losing an arm or leg. They also can't seem to depress the pedal very well. I guess I'm the prick who after everything they did for this country, I have to go and pick this subject about them and complain about it.

As a European, I don't care about it anyway - but I probably wouldn't do so as an American either, since I find the notion of "dying for one's country" retarded and that of "dying for the jingoist interest of some ideology-oriented nutcases happening to be in control" even more so.

But they died for YOU, not themselves. You realize, of course, that without them your life (And your life especially, since to my knowoledge you're living across the ocean) would not exist, right? You realize every Ally, just like every Nazi, who died, made the sacrifice so that you could exist, right?

Yeah. I don't think "dying for their country" means "dying for the government that makes sure their country doesn't collapse economically and socially". It means "dying for all who live, have lived, or will live on this land." :|

Well, no one in my family's died in a war... But my great granddad, granddad, and uncle were in wars. It kinda holds a special place to me, but I don't really "celebrate" or whatever. Just a courteous nod to those who risked their lives to make sure I wasn't born a nazi, or something. Then I go on with my life.

As for "dying for your country", it does sound kinda stupid when I think about it. But, people wanna make sure we don't become communists or something, and I'm grateful for that. If they want to jump into enemy fire, let them?

I didn't ask them to die for me. That's their own fault.

And like I said before, I'm an arrogant bastard.

I take a moment to consider the deaths of war protesters on Veterans' Day.

Now I don't understand. If the both of them were defending their fellow humans, then what was the threat they were defending against? Also, no army of any country fights to kill people, but to defend and possess property and resources. Where's the sacrifice "so that you could exist"? I find it utterly absurd to die or kill for the sake of property, and at the worst doing that for motives of ideologically-oriented rulers. I see absolutely no glory in that.
