It's coincidental that you mentioned Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, as I just played it a week ago at my friend's house and I've had it for a few years now as well. It truly is very fun and addictive, but also too short like you said. A hack with the additional stuff you're planning would be awesome.

There doesn't seem to be much hacking information for the game though. All I found was this post by Tony H. Maybe he has some additional information that he'd be willing to share about the game if you contact him?

Best of luck with your new plans, Retro.

EDIT: Oops. There's also the following link, but it isn't much:

http://info.sonicretro.org/SCHG:Dr._Robotnik%27s_Mean_Bean_Machine

Darn "D" with the colon. Sorry for the inconvenience; I didn't know how to fix that if it is possible...

Thanks for the information. When I'm ready and I have a lot more time I will read up on Genesis ASM and see if I can do some things to these games.

I'd like to see someone create Ice Slippery TSA attribute for every level (Not Cossack 1 only) for Rockman 4. I don't know if I can do the code but it may take some tries if possible.

A Megaman 2 two-player co-op hack.
Im sure it is possible to do, somehow. Both players would be active at the same time.

Some ideas:
The Select button could function to make the player disappear. Pressing the Select button again makes the player appear at the other player's location (as long as he is on top of a wall). The "teleportation" can function to save players in some cases, like when halted scrolling makes one player unable to reach a platform (and falls down at the side of the screen). A player can use Select to drop in and out at any time. (I obviously got some ideas from the New SMB Wii trailer..)

The player that gives the finishing blow to a boss, gets the weapon.

It would be another project on my "project stack" so.. i dont think an attempt will happen.

Hey guys. Normally, I don't consult other people for aesthetic ideas concerning my projects, but I thought it'd be interesting to get some input.

I've decided that I want to do away with the desert theme of the second world in my SMB3 hack. Reasons:

- desert theme for specifically world 2 is overused in SMB3 hacks, most-likely due to being the default world theme. In fact, the ONLY Mario 3 hack I know of that doesn't have world 2 as a desert is Mario Adventure, and that's just silly.

- I've always hated deserts in video games. Specifically RPGs, but the music and atmosphere of them in both of the New Super Mario Bros. games cause a very noticeable "bump" in the experience of both titles.

- I've been angry ever since I found out NSMBWii had the EXACT same world themes as its DS-based predecessor, so I want to try to stray from using those themes as much as possible.

So now I come to you: do you think you can suggest a better world 2 theme for me than just plain-old desert? I'm all ears, but be aware that as a perfectionist elitist bastard, I shall judge harshly! Think you can help me out?

Sure. If anyone wants to replace the world 2 desert theme with a different theme, go right ahead. I myself am going to overhaul the overworld themes for many of the worlds for my 3rd SMB3 hack quite a bit, and I have already finished over half of it already. I would give more specific suggestions, but I think I'll just see what anyone else has to say about that first.

It's veryveryVERY easy to make your own wacky palettes and music for your themed worlds. Hex editing that should be no problem. For instance, like the time I wanted to turn World 2 to Ice Land:

Posted by Quick Curly
One of my friends who just started a new SMB3 hack
Yes, that was me.
Posted by Quick Curly
asked me how I made the hills speed up in my second preview of Quick Bros. 2. I had the notes buried somewhere, but I dug them up again and found out the necessary data. I also did a little logging a little earlier and found some additional stuff - not a lot, mind you, since something or someone always likes to pull me away from what I'm doing.

Animation speed (ex. dancing hills, trees, water, etc.)
Value of 00 gives fastest speed except for World 5 which doesn't seem to animate.

0x17C11 - 0x17C14: 11 11 11 11 ; World 1 tiles animation speed
0x17C15 - 0x17C18: 1F 1F 1F 1F ; World 2 tiles animation speed
0x17C19 - 0x17C1C: 17 17 17 17 ; World 3 tiles animation speed
0x17C1D - 0x17C20: 17 17 17 17 ; World 4 tiles animation speed
0x17C21 - 0x17C24: 00 00 00 00 ; World 5 tiles animation speed (no animation)
0x17C25 - 0x17C28: 0B 0B 0B 0B ; World 6 tiles animation speed
0x17C29 - 0x17C2C: 05 05 05 05 ; World 7 tiles animation speed
0x17C2D - 0x17C30: 0F 0F 0F 0F ; World 8 tiles animation speed
0x17C31 - 0x17C34: 14 14 14 14 ; World 9 tiles animation speed

Status bar

0x35443 - 0x35444: FE EC ; Tiles used for blank and $ (dollar sign) in status bar.
0x35454 - 0x35455: FE ED ; Tiles used for blank and clock in status bar.

Desert Hill (World 2) music

          0x3875A: 31 ; Part 31.
0x387AD - 0x387B3: 00 02 AD 1B 0E 2F 33 ; Music header for part 31.
0x37D12 - 0x38D4A: (0x39 bytes) ; Music data.

Big Island (World 4) music

          0x3875D: 23 ; Part 23.
0x3879F - 0x387A5: 30 99 AC 20 0A 61 65 ; Music header for part 23.
0x38CA9 - 0x38D11: (0x69 bytes) ; Music data.

So with that, you can run FCEUXD's code/data logger right when the music you're thinking about is played. Stop it when the music doesn't have any new parts or the amount of data logged stops increasing. Any music-associated data should be found in the 038000 - 03B000 range (under ROM File), give or take. Then replace the headers with the other music's header that you want to use. This might be a problem because some songs use more music headers and some use less, so if you want to replace a song that only has one music header like the World 6 Ice Music with music that has more than one music header, I don't know, you're sort of out of luck there...

Well, thank you for that very large amount of information, but I already know how to change the world themes to my liking. I simply wanted creative ideas on what I could actually change it to.

For a World 2 theme, Kirby's Dream Land 2 did a forest. Perhaps you could modify the sky clouds to look like trees? Maybe make it a tropica beach thing. I think that's what Kirby's Adventure did. Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout had a desert for the 2nd world, but it also had a "Rocky/Stone" theme, a Fairytale Forest theme, and a Underground/Cavern theme. Maybe do what Ducktales did and do the Amazon, or Transylvania. Glover and Cameleon Twist did a Circus/Fun Fare theme for their second worlds.

I'd stay away from themes like Outer Space, the Sky, or Ice Land until at least World 3. They seem like harder themes.

Y'know, now that I think of it, I probably could do a forest theme as long as I'm using Reuben. Thanks for your input.

I'm not much for "outer space" unless I make some kind of special world a la Super Mario World. My world 5 is still going to be a sky world, but with a thematic twist to it. Ice...I'll move somewhere else. I thought it was silly that world 3 was icy in NSMBWii.

Then that's incredibly easy. Just have it your way. Just have a world themed you wanna have it. I'd always make cool maps if I'd get bored while on the computer (barely happens anymore). I have a bunch of maps that have strange yet wonderful colors, themes, and other knick-knacks. The maps I will post are in order, although skipping World 5 and 8. First four worlds of one of them:

Some of the sprites were out of place there, yeah. I usually don't even focus on anything but the tiles of the map itself. I don't tend to do World 5 and 8 since they are too different. Now I will show another one of my map hacks (Sprites may be left undone again):

E: Corrected a punctuation mistake.

Pure Saber is a great program!!!!

How he behaved 80% of the enemies of Mega Man 5 (GB) and most of the weapons in this game are in the game MegaMan Forever, would not be possible to make / create a Staroids MegaMan 5 (GB)??

This would be cool... I've actually been wondering if this is possible myself. Although I doubt very much that it is.... What if we could replace one of Mega Man's weapons with another character... Protoman... or Bass? That way the character could switch between the two during game play, just as he would as if selecting a weapon from the start menu.

I'm a noob when it comes to ASM, so I'm probably making no sense here... but the idea of having a two player Mega Man ROM hack would be killer!

Ahh.. you could have both Protoman and Bass. Protoman would be able to slide, which gives you access to places/secrets that Megaman can't reach. Same with Bass. He would have his double-jump which would allow you to reach places far up. If its Megaman 2, Item-1 and Item-3 would be removed, you use Bass in their place.

You could make MegaMan V: Staroids (GB)
Rip the monsters, music and weapons of hacks that already contains. The hardest part will create the staroids. But after EnkerMan and Quint in MM4 MI hack anything is possible.
