Seeing as I don't even have a name for it nor any work completed, let's just leave it as it is for now. I have very high hopes for this hack. I never really even decided to make this hack even until just this morning. All this SMB3 vapor in this thread is to blame!

Now, I wonder if I could get some ASM help with this? Perhaps I could attract a few people to help if I could post a few screenies of WIP after a while...

Thanks Quick Curly, I looked at World 2 on Mario's Destiny. Only 3 levels need to be edited to finish World 2! I'll look through world 3 and 4 in a bit so I can determine if it'll be a 4 World hack.

Also, someone really should finish Strange Mario Bros. 3 cause that's been in limbo for almost 10 years, some people think that Acmlm'll be pissed if someone finished his hack (from what I was told in e-mails) but I don't think he'll care.

Btw, Mario's Destiny is based on the (E) version of the ROM so it'll play a bit fast.

KP9000: If anything you wanna help me out with some graphics for Mario's Destiny? World 3 and 4 are half and half when it comes to editing the graphics, I'll edit somma the levels in world 2 first.

LOL! I'd say that this thread is living up to its name then - "Hack Ideas Thread" - as now you're interested in jumping into the SMB3 hacking thanks to the posts that have recently been piling up.

You're welcome. As we've always said, we ROM hackers look out for and support each other. It sounds like it would be a nice 4-World hack. I know that one thing that's always on my mind is how you're able to manage SO many ROM hacks at once, and as it has been made obvious, a handful of those are actually all individual SMB3 hacks! I can barely find the time to manage one project! So making Mario Destiny a 4-World hack might help finishing it off easier.

Now that you bring up finishing off unfinished SMB3 hacks, if I recall correctly, DahrkDaiz mentioned to you before that if anyone wanted to finish off Luigi vs. Mario, they could. I saw that around the time that I started Quick Bros. 2 and some time before I joined the Luigi's Chronicles 2 project, but otherwise I might have taken a stab at it.

Hmm - the (E) version. That'll be different!

Best of luck with the SMB3 hacks, you two! I was just taking a quick second to post from here at school. Class is done now, so I'm on my way home to do some more work on Quick Bros. 2. With any luck, I'm hoping to release the hack VERY soon...

So far, it looks like the idea is to hack Mario's Destiny atm. Here's some pics of levels I made for GhettoYouth for the hack...

He was using DD's TSA editor to make those kick ass graphics...

My level of world 1-6, oh shi...

The airship I edited, GY did a sweet job with those graphics. This hack started in 2007, and the last build I got on me is from Feb of last year, better get crackin...

Those additional screenshots of the hack are awesome, Googie! I also really like those unique graphic changes! I'm really looking forward to how this excellent SMB3 hack turns out! Again, best of luck with it!

I find it awesome that this chain reaction of growing interest in SMB3 hacks in progress was started with KP9000's awesome new enemy idea and your screenshot of it, Googie. This is all really exciting!

Here's my idea I've been holding.

Since there 2 or 3 Touhou SMB1 hacks, I decided to make this SMB1 hack or even SMB3 NES hack more interesting.

The hack is called Super Mario Bros. Gensokyo. I don't know if it's going to be a big project but the capture Touhous after beating Bowser will somewhat act like All Night Nippon Mario Bros.

Don't know when I'm going to start
Don't know when it took place

But I've been busy with real life so time is short for me this time.

Thanks Quick, yeah it took like about a week to make those 3 levels for the hack. I'll have free time tomorrow to make a level in world 2. ^^;

I have been hacking SMB3 recently and while editing graphics I found something interesting. Since the pipe tiles are animated, they have a separate frame for when a P-Switch is activated. I was thinking that when a P-Switch is active, special pipe graphics with a question mark on the rim show up and the destination of that pipe is changed while the P-Switch is active...

If you put a question mark on the P-Switch frame, then every pipe will have that question mark during the P-Switch period. In order to make it for a single pipe, or change the destination, would require some ASM hacking. Probably more work then it is worth. Although the idea is pretty good, it's probably not worth it considering you could just use other objects to create the same effect, such as an additional pipe, blocks that disappear with a P-Switch, etc.

Thing is, pipes seem to have its *own frame* for the P-Switch. Now, I don't know if the game originally had this idea or something close to it, but when I changed the pipe graphics for all 4 frames, went back to my game and hit a P-Switch, the pipes turned back to normal. I'm going to play with this some more.

I took note of that as well since I'm still trying to finish up the graphics for Quick Bros. 2. It's something that I still need to play around with.
Best of luck with your idea!

Me telling you that it is probably more work than it is worth is probably the wrong attitude to have. I think if you believe in your idea, you should do what it takes to make it happen. I say go for it. Just letting you know though, that you will need to do some ASM hacking. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to go about the ASM part of it, but it's just an idea; hence the thread title. I am going to have to figure out the rest of it later on. I've got bigger fish to fry with my hack that's pissing me off lately.

If it's really something you'd want to look into, just check out some ASM documents on RHDN. A couple of good ones that are fairly easy to follow:

6502 ASM Codes by Stealth Translations (May 15, 2008)
6502 Instruction Summary by CricketNE (April 23, 2008)

Find some documented data and code for SMB3 at Data Crystal or refer to the many documents that are included with SMB3 Workshop to get some ideas of areas that you can try some ASM experiments on.

You can also refer to RetroRain's topic - Your First ASM Hack (Tutorial with pictures) - for an easy SMB3 ASM hack! You have to start somewhere, and RetroRain's quick tutorial is actually a nice start that shows you some basics of what you have to look for and do. Best of luck!

One thing I want to see is a LttP boss rush. Start with 3 hearts, and after each boss gain an optional heart container, a dungeon item, and some arrow/bomb/magic refills. And there could be a timer, and a ranking system based on your speed, accuracy, hits taken, and items picked up. Also, there are some items that are required to beat bosses, like the hammer for the Helmasaur King. So these would be forced items. Maybe have the door locked until it's picked up or have it out of a chest, just on the ground right in front of the door.

Unfortunately have no hacking skill, or any desire to learn. I just have the creativity.

Okay these are really general...

Retro-rom hack:
Essentially, 8-bit-ify some SNES games to their NES counterparts.

For example, a legend of zelda link to the past hack, with zelda style 1 graphics, and and more synthetic sounding music. Large sprites, still in 8-bit style, with just general extras and improvements, but truly having 8-bit flare...

Sequels that should have been:
Kid Icarus II? Bionic Commando II (although I guess there is remake or something and the gameboy color, but whatever) Cosmo Police Galivan II (well that exists for snes, but it is horrible, and nothing like its famicom counterpart...)

Making games that suck, no longer suck:
The NES has a wide variety of top notch games. Some however, are awful. Either fix the gameplay, story line, palette, graphics (asm hacks for another mapper perhaps), levels, music, sfx, etc. Make it fun to play, "revivify" that old awful game.

More female leads:
Self-explanatory, female heroines are in short supply on the NES.
Let Link get kidnapped, or the lead character in an RPG be a girl. Say bye to Frionel and hello to Maria.

Holy ****, so I'm the only one here who loves Cosmo Police Galivan.

There are many great NES games that I'm amazed have never been hacked.
