After watching this youtube video I had a thought - a true 2p DKC mode (none of this swapping around) could be incredibly interesting.

That being said I'm aware of the frightening amount of ASM it would involve. :/ But the foundations are there.

I have an idea for a Simon's Quest hack. I have been mulling around with this idea for a long time. It goes like this.

Castlevania II Simon's Death (originally it was to be called Dawn of Damning)

Simon fights and destroys Dracula in the first adventure but immediately succumbs to the Curse. With no Belmont bloodline and evil going ape #@$%, a group of questionable priests concede that the only way to stop the impending evil is to try to raise the long deceased Simon. Just as ceremony nears completion things go wrong and Simon is resurrected as a skeleton. His is in unspeakable agony. He is a being of evil he would normally destroy (a creature of the night). The other priests have been killed or have fled at the sight of this horror except for one. As the only honorable priest he promises to assist Simon in restoring him. He tells Simon that he must avoid daytime and he cannot use holy weapons like his whip until he has purged the curse and regained his human form. He will take on the powers, forms and weapons of skeleton, duhallan, zombie, knight, harpy, merman and maybe even some bosses in order to purifiy himself. All the while he must also do sub quests, solve puzzles, acquire and buy weapons and items and find the body parts of the Count all before the sun rises on the 7th day. The game will play more like Zelda II Adventure of Link (no overhead view though). There will be many of the settings from CV 1,2 and 3 more bosses and all of the lesser enemies. I have more add later.

Hacking Base: Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars

Hack Name: Unknown

Plot: Mario goes to save Princess Peach, all seems normal until...

He goes to Bowser's Room and he says: "OMGWTF" the camera pans to the chandellers and Culex is there! He claims that Bowser is locked up, and the game will transition to places in the future by itself!

So you fight Culex, he's weak at the moment, he didn't start gaining strength until after the sword came down. After you beat him, your launched out of the castle for NO REASON. And the sword jabs itself into the castle, as usual.

Once you land in your house, outside, Bowser, Geno, Mallow, and Peach are all there to help you kill Culex again and again. They don't know what's going on, and neither do you, Hell, I don't know what is going on!

...Yeah.., It sounds reeeaaallly stupid as of now.

Hack Name: Boss Rush! Quest to be the Best!

Story: After the original story ends, Toad relays a message to Mario: Smithy and his Gang are back for one final Battle! You are immedately given 999 Coins and 999 Frog coins and sent to a shop with the best items at 1 coins each, and 1 frog coin each. Once you leave, you are escorted by flunkies to Mushroom Kingdom, where Mack is there to fight you! Once you win, you are escorted by his minions to fight the next Boss (The bosses go in order.)

...So uh.. that one seems a bit better than before.

So, any feedback?

Okay these are really general...

Retro-rom hack:
Essentially, 8-bit-ify some SNES games to their NES counterparts.

For example, a legend of zelda link to the past hack, with zelda style 1 graphics, and and more synthetic sounding music. Large sprites, still in 8-bit style, with just general extras and improvements, but truly having 8-bit flare...

Sequels that should have been:
Kid Icarus II? Bionic Commando II (although I guess there is remake or something and the gameboy color, but whatever) Cosmo Police Galivan II (well that exists for snes, but it is horrible, and nothing like its famicom counterpart...)

Making games that suck, no longer suck:
The NES has a wide variety of top notch games. Some however, are awful. Either fix the gameplay, story line, palette, graphics (asm hacks for another mapper perhaps), levels, music, sfx, etc. Make it fun to play, "revivify" that old awful game.

More female leads:
Self-explanatory, female heroines are in short supply on the NES.
Let Link get kidnapped, or the lead character in an RPG be a girl. Say bye to Frionel and hello to Maria.

Hack Name:Mario's Coin Quest

original game:super mario bros. 3

Story:
One day in the mushroom kingdom mario goes to visit peach. upon arriving at the castle toad tells mario that peach had gone to the kingdoms magical vault in town. he also tells mario that peach has been out for a 5 hours and it should have only taken her 1 hour. so mario knowing bowser heads off to try to rescue the prinsess from bowser (who did not actually kidnap peach.) gathering coins along the way. (which he will later store inside the kingdoms magical vault.)
details:by storing coins inside the vault (which can be done on the title screen) you unlock bonus stuff such as luigi as playable character and Power-ups that are non-obtainable unless you deposit enough coins. a shop at the title screen also has special items including certain unlockables that are not possible to obtain in levels or the vault.
special items also appear inside levels these items unlock new power-ups and abilitys for mario.

unlockables:

Luigi:deposit 500 coins in the vault

Racoon suit:unlock by obtaining a secret item in a level.

Wario: Beat game as mario.

Secret ending: Store the maxumum amount of coins inside the vault

yoshi:buy at shop for 5000 coins (which are taken from the vault)

Wall Jump:Found inside the level and gives only mario the ability to wall jump.

Charge Fire:allows mario and luigi to charge up their fire ball ability and hit multiple foes with one shot. found inside a level.

Stock-up:allows all characters to stack two of the same power-ups allowing more hits to be taken. found inside a level.

Super stack-up:allows all the abilitys as stock-up but increses the power of projectile abilitys. found inside the shop after you obtain stock-up and you can buy it for 10'000 coins.

Fire Racoon suit:buy in shop for 20'000 coins and if mario or luigi gets a fire flower while equiped with the racoon suit (or the other way around) they can fly and shoot fire at the same time.

And more stuff...

Secrets:probably not the best to tell you this but peach is actually locked inside the vault ... Opps

now i know its probably not possible or even logical to attempt it but it is just an idea right?

also a world select which allows you to select a world you start in should be added and +100 coins for defeating bowser. also once youve unlocked something it stays unlocked no matter how meny coins are in the vault eather more or less. and items that unlock something that are found inside levels continue to appear inside the level but rather than unlocking something (if youve already unlocked it) you get 1000 points and turn into big mario if your small and fire mario if your big.

Nice ideas there. I actually like them. I've been thinking about getting back into SMB3 hacking. I still have my hack, Dark Mario, to finish. I haven't worked on it in a really long time, because I got bored and was working on Mega Man: Fully Loaded. Now I'm not saying I would use these ideas, because I like to come up with my own stuff, and I wouldn't use these without permission anyway. But your ideas are a step in the right direction. I've been thinking of ASM hacks lately, what I can do to SMB3, and not much has come to mind. All of the good things have been done already.

Mariofan0's ideas kinda inspires some SMB3 ideas... How about making Xbox 360/PS3 style goals in SMB3? Say, you complete goals such as--

1) Gain X amount of coins
2) Kill X amount of enemies
3) Complete all levels
4) Complete 50 levels
5) Get 5up in matching game

--And get different endings based on the goals you complete. No game mechanics are changed, except for the visual confirmation that the goal has been completed on screen. Perhaps you could change/add endings based on the goals you complete... Say, you kill a crapload of enemies, the princess gets mad at you for being a vicious murderer...

well if you want you can have them ive been hoping to use them myself when i learn ASM and such but usually im almost always in need of someone to ASM and desighn GFX for me as im strongly suited for level desighn also please dont take all of my ideas for the game as i wanted mine to be unique with gameplay and have a funny storyline. also im pritty good at ideas this game idea has been something i had thought about for a while but couldnt really try. in short im offering to help increase the flow of ideas for everyone if they need help with that. im pritty good at storylines at least thats what i like to think anyways. im not entirely sure about that though. if you have seen any of my hacks ive never actually completed one as of yet due to the fact ASM coding and lack of enough knowledge on my part. the only hack ive ever had really gotten into was a super mario world hack called Mario And The Missing Magical Musical Notes which was put down not because of myself but because it was a team hack and at the start there was a person helping with the GFX but he/she left so with the lack of a GFX desighner and nobody offering to help i had to put it on ICE for a while.

if you search my alternate nickname Kidlink03 on youtube you could probably find a few interesting videos of the levels ive made for the game.

also ideas come to me over time really depends im good at comming up with this stuff however it takes some time maybe 1 hour to a week so really its kinda random but i do have a spark for this kind of thing so...

other unlockables might include daisy, peach, and sence no two charicters will be exsactly the same they will be noticably more (or less) difficult from Mario. so basicly mario is normal mode luigi is easy yoshi is very easy wario is hard and the princesses are special which isnt exsactly a difficult setting again all the characters have their own unique power-ups/abilitys which by the way the number of which can be improved as you progress but only certain characters can obtain special items to add a new ability or power up to the roster. also not that it doesnt nessaserily have to be mario who gets a ability for himself it could be luigi who gets marios ability which later allows mario to use the ability and vice versa.

also note that i have worked with ASM coding before while using a sonic the hedgehog 1 & 2 rom and I managed to add spindash to sonic 1 however it was incomplete but it worked.
again i dont know as much as i would like if i knew how to add my own stuff it would help but i dont know much about the roms internal workings i dont know what codes to add to make this do that or that do this. so basicly i need to find the information already inside the rom in order to change anything. i think you use a debugger but i dont understand how to use one. also thanks for your support on the ideas.

Ive been comming up with more ideas for my hack (which sence I cant do ASM edits its impossible for me to do it alone... If I Had Help...)

we will start with the features. including a few ideas from DD I managed to create a decent game I think.

1.unlockables-unlock new stuff by finding objects in levels, buying them in a special shop, storing X amount of coins, Leveling up to a spicific level, or beating the game with mario, a spicific amount of times or on all difficulty levels. and so the list continues.

2.Level system-characters gain experience by defeating enemies 10 for every normal enemie 100 for every boss and 500 for bowser. once they gain enough EXP they level up by 1 (Max 5)(Start 1) every time they level up they gain a new ability such as tripple jump.

3.coin storage-allows storage of coins in the vault and allows you to carry more coins then normal the only downfall is you cant use them in toad houses and can only use them to buy stuff at a special shop acsessable through the title screen.

4.new enemies-self explanitory

5.new power-ups-Self explanitory (ill talk more about this later)

6.Two more worlds-worlds 9 and 10 which will only be acsessable through certain means.

7. one bonus level- not really a bonus (due to the fact that it follows the story) but is unlockable all the same and is only acsessed through world select.

8. Seven (thats right) Seven Playable Characters all with unique abilitys and traits that will help you or possibly make it harder. each charicter has thier own EXP and must unlock worlds on there own by beating the world before it. (exsept world 9 and 10 which will be unlocked for all characters under cirtain requirements.

9.Sound test-whats this the list of sounds is incomplete well thats becuase alot of them are unlockable and stored in groups of SFX And BGM.

10.Cheat codes-why would you use these thats cheating.

11.pause menu- lists a bunch of stats and actions you can do during mid game this allows you to save which it does after every world anyways save and quit which in this case causes you score to drop to zero. item in your storage dissapers. you have to start thwe world all over again and if you unlocked a spicific lock it will stay unlocked. also when you save coins are deposited in the vault and removed from the current game so wether you save or not can be important due to the fact that you will also need them to buy power-ups.]

12-new abilitys-allows mario and friends to use spisific moves and power-ups almost all of these abilitys have to be unlocked in some way shape or form.

13.high score system-displays the highest score obtained while using a spicific character.

14. new objects-self explanitory.

Now this is just a small list of what ive come up with and with a few more ideas it will be great.

Playable characters:
Yoshi-Very Easy:With his flutter jump and the ability to use the fire flower (unlike mario or luigi he can only use the mushroom and the fire flower) he is ready for action in this Race to gather coins.

Luigi-Easy:With a higher jump and slower fall than his brother he is ready for some extreemly high jumps. (able to use all power-ups)

Mario-Normal:Not much to say exsept his ability to wall jump allows him to climb areas luigi can get to with his jumping ability.

Wario-Hard:he is very heavy and as such cant jump as high he also cant dash making it nearly impossible to jump huge gaps. but his power is massive he can take down most bosses in two hits. and with his x2 coin bonus he makes a slight comeback.

Peach-Special:Cant run as fast as daisy but has a slightly higher jump hight.

Daisy-Special:Cant jump as high as peach but runs faster.

Toad-Special:His jump and his speed are his most reliable assets while running at max speed he becomes invicible and can take out all enemies with a single hit and he can also run directly through bricks from the side aswell he jumps higher than mario and can thus obtain items luigi can but the damage he does to bosses is halve of what mario can do.

what i didnt mention up their is that luigi does the same damage as toad but if he gets to level 5 can become just as powerful as mario.

Power-ups: (or i should say power-up at this point.
Mushroom-All characters can use this to get bigger and take 1 extra hit.
Fire-flower-Only the mario bros. can use this normally but if yoshi gets a certain unlockable (not yet decided how to unlock it) yoshi will be able to use it aswell.
Racoon-suit-ive taken away the racoon suit and made it so mario and luigi need to get a Special Ability Item to cause the item boxes to spawn them otherwise they should spawn a fireflower or a mushroom. (only mario and luigi can use this suit.)
Cape suit (not final) like toads ability to run through bricks this allows mario or luigi to run through bricks while running at top speed.(only mario and luigi can use this suit.)

Cape mario sports a blue shirt/cap And red overalls.
Cape luigi Sports a blue shirt/cap and green overalls.
they both sport capes that allow them to float for a short time. (yellow if you must know)

now a complex system of abilitys.

Abilitys Mario:
Wall jump
tripple jump
backflip
goldleaf
EXPx2 Mario Spicific
Stock-up
Power-mixing
Item Storage/item box from SMW
Fire Charge
Final Impact
Spin Attack

Now final impact allows mario to jump on spiked and fire enemies without getting hurt but only works when small. just so your aware.

Abilitys luigi:
Skidding jump
Power jump
Spinning summersalt
EXPx2 Luigi Spicific
FlameThrower
Power-Boost
Item storage
Stock Up
Power-Mixing
Gold leaf

Power-boost is a move that increase the damage luigi does to bosses
And the flamethrower allows luigi to shoot 5 fireballs at once.

now you might have noticed that some abilitys mario has luigi also has well actually a few of those are going to be used by all characters such as item storage and stock up and the neat thing about stock up is that it will allow you to grab two of the same items lets say mushroom and take 1 more hit than normal however that doesnt mean if you get two fire flowers you take 2 more hits nope only 1. and the power mixing ability is only useable for mario and luigi spicific due to there ability to use more power ups than yoshi.

anyways yea ive done alot of thinking on doing a game... if only i had ASM knowledge and the skills to pull it off alone.

I've been playing the Resident games on my Ps2 and Game Cube, and I've been playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES...

So, here's an idea. How about a ZAMN hack called Resident Evil? Zeke and Julie and be Chris and Jill, the levels will be edited of course and a few knick knacks here and there. Just throwing it out there... ^^;

Hell yeah, I'm poking at the editor right now. I'll see if I can chef up a level a day this week, that way hopefully a spriter/spriters'll wanna take interest.

Just goes to show that you can have the skills, but not the will.

I've felt the same way pretty much since the New Year began. I always have other things that I have to take care of first (ex. school, etc.) and I feel that the little time I do have isn't enough for me to sit down and focus on what I'm doing, so I haven't really tried to do serious hacking for about a month now. I can still manage a little level editing every now and then, but it isn't too long before I lose any motivation to continue. I hate when it happens as well, but it's sort of becoming a regular thing now. I figure once the school year is done, I'll be motivated to jump back into serious ROM hacking again. Until then, I've just been playing video games and other ROM hacks during the little free time I've had, maybe in hopes that I get a little motivation back. All in all, I hope that you can find that inspiration that will allow you to continue with your awesome ROM hacks.

Oh, by the way, I found these 2 videos on YouTube just now, that are really cool. They are not actual games, but they were made in flash/photoshop. This is some guy's creation of what a hypothetical MegaMan 10 would look like, and I gotta say, for a made-up video, it looks really good. And the ideas and talent is just perfect. Check out the robot bosses and the weapons you get from them!

These 2 videos are definitely a must-see for any Megaman fan!

I'd like to see Super Mario Kart dumbed down to 8-bit NES. I once read that someone once made a version like that but I've never seen it.
