I'll tell you now, the topic was a ridiculous pun. Anyway ...

So, I'm sure most of you put deodorant on in the mornings (emphasis on most), probably because you smell like crap. I put on deodorant because of a continual fear that I'm going to start smelling terrible for no reason. Blame society

But the other day, my friend and I got to talking, because I realized he doesn't have any deodorant, and his view was basically this: "Your natural scent contains a thousand pieces of information about you, hormone levels, general health, whether you've been exercising in the last few hours .. and for thousands of years, that was how women chose a man. Now, that doesn't just drop off of the face of the human genome .. so as far as I can think, putting on deodorant makes people less attractive, but perhaps more bearable around their same sexed peers.", which made me get to thinking. I am well aware that being sweaty and smelling terrible is definitely not the best way to seem attractive, but perhaps there's some logic to what he said, maybe there's some way to cancel out the chemical waste in sweat, and leave just the hormones and pheromones. And, since the reaction women had was purely subconscious, maybe we filter out the "good" parts of the smell ourselves. Any thoughts?

And no, not really. Natural smells are there of course, but since it's socially acceptable to not smell like total shit, a light deoderant, cologne, or perfume scent is fine on a person.

It's true that the concept will not be phased out of the human genome anytime soon, but I think we have conditioned ourselves towards deodorant more than the natural scents.

On the other hand, there is perhaps more to "smell of fear" than just body signals. We do release chemicals under certain conditions/situations and they probably exceed the deodorant chemicals.

There are products that claim to mimic some of our chemical scents in order to, for the most part, attract the opposite sex. The validity of such items are subject to debate.

On a side note, there is a debate as to whether deodorant is harmful to a person. The claim is, some of the chemicals get absorbed through the pores and over time cause damage.

One, if you wake up in the morning and "smell like crap", go take a shower instead of trying to cover it up.

Two, the "natural scent containing information" thing is largely independent from the malodorous aspects of sweat. The typical "sweaty smell" is caused by bacterial decay of protein in your sweat, which doesn't say much about the state of your body itself at all anyway; sweat has no recognizable smell while it's "fresh". From what I recall, deodorants work mainly by containing chemicals that denaturate some of the proteins in question (cf. the effect of fried eggs solidifying), effectively clogging the sweat glands.

What it effectively comes down to is that, in modern societies, the effect all potentially functional on a biochemical/subconscious level pheromones in your sweat might have is utterly undone by the profoundly bad impression you'd leave on a conscious level if you smell like a goatbuck.

I've never used any deodorant in my life, and I smell fine.

...at least I think I do.

How old are you? Some people don't really start sweating or smelling bad until late teen years ..

You tend to stop perceiving sensations you are exposed to for a long time.

I usually shower, and wear deodorant and a cologne.

Cause I can't stand body odors.

But that's just my personal opinion.

There's also a difference between deodorant and antiperspirant...
The former should be preferred to the latter. Sweating is probably an important bodily function...

I know a person with this same mentality. As much as I hate to say it, you likely do smell.

As for pheromone-cologne, I personally wouldn't mind trying some just to see if it works, though I'll likely never go to the trouble to order it. :|

"Your natural scent contains a thousand pieces of information about you, hormone levels, general health, whether you've been exercising in the last few hours .. and for thousands of years, that was how women chose a man.
It's highly illogical to think something like this. If human noses were so powerful then we'd be on leashes of other humans tracking down human prisoner escapees. I believe (through logical thinking) that it's all done with the brain. The opposite sex's thoughts about you (or someone) are affected by a crapload of variables such as how the brain developed, lifestyle, culture, and a ton of other things. A woman might think you're hot and want you to do some bonage, but will probably never consider it due to your/her social status.

knowledge

Having receptors for certain chemicals that only trigger a subconscious response does not equal a particularly keen conscious sense of smell, either.

I use deodorant but if I know i'm not going anywhere that day, I probably wont put any on, unless something comes up. No cologne, though. I don't like how most of it smells.
