It started with an obscure, japanese freeware shmup called Fraxy, created by a man known to us only as MON. Fraxy is a sandbox shmup. An arena shooter where almost every aspect of the game can be customized. The main draw is the Boss editor. This extremely flexible program lets you create almost any boss you want, using various plates, weapons, cores and joints. Over time, Fraxy is constantly upgraded with new versions which have included more plates and tips, more exact turning joints, cores, weapons, and the like. Also added is an event system which just further increases the flexibility and possibilities.
Many people were able to find this game due to some it's noteriety (such as being called best Freeware Game of 2007 by a forum whose name escapes me) and they began making videos showcasing their bosses and custom graphics. These people finding eachother by chance of related youtube videos sparked the beginnings of the community. One user, JPteeto, decided to begin a 100 meg pbwiki, which he called the Fraxy Compendium. He rounded up all the youtube users to contribute and advertise. He never thought it would go over the 100 meg limit.... The videos made the game insanely popular, garnering a large number of new members fairly quickly.
At the Compendium, bosses and images were shared, ideas exchanged, wishlists compiled, etc. Eventually I stumbled upon the game, and before downloading it, I researched it a bit. I found the Compendium. I swiftly joined and began contributing, though it took a while for me to start making videos of my own. I watched it grow from it's`early stages to the point where we began a Theme of the Month, made a User Index, upgraded to the 1 gig pbwiki, and the like. Then, for whatever reason, JPteeto left. No notices or anything, just vanished. We were left to our own devices, like a god had created a world of sentient beings, helped it get started, and backed off, leaving only fond memories.
A few members rose up to help lead. Nightkev, myself, and another user named Screature who may or may not join here, were the most prominent. We ran the Theme of the Month for about 2 months, started an official wishlist, watched the community slowly expand further, and helped out people new to the wiki and Fraxy in general. Then there was a nagging problem: we had no admin to ban or help in case we were attacked. Nightkev then conversed with his friend, Arbe (who I'm sure you all know in one way or another), and we moved from an unprotected pbwiki and a freewebs forum to a more active forum with a nice community and a more customizeable wiki.
Around the same time, some of the more youtube-centric users created another pbwiki, an "Expansion Pack" so they wouldn't have to deal with upload times of the Compendium. This, spearheaded by Gemstonehelix, split the community nearly in two. The expansion is still used and is home to some of the youtube-fraxyers and more story based role-playing through fraxy.
Me and Screature, who had become one of my good buddies, became mods and helped protect the new wiki, were still judges in the TotM (theme of the month), and became very active in the community. Slowly but surely, the users all migrated to the new wiki. We were happy to have power, and a still growing community, and a larger community around us. Though the TotM ran a bit more sluggishly, everything progressed, and all was fine.... for about 3 months.
We arrive at now, where Arbe is relinquishing GenericBoard, the wiki may or may not be preserved, and the unknowing Fraxyers, who just wish for a stable base of operations, so to speak, are forced to move to a large, more alien community. Not many know about it yet, but I'll do my best to bring fraxyers here and keep the community going.
It makes me sad to see the Compendium grow, split, move, and then move/split once more. It feels like the community has changed from a large continent to smaller islands, scattered about.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and for bearing with my, admittedly cheesy, metaphors and near overbearing serious tone. I hope to make this a stable home for the Fraxy Community and a happy one for all involved. I hope I enjoy my stay, and you all don't mind the move of (possibly) a bunch of users ^.^
