Everything is becoming YouTube'd these days. You'd think that wouldn't be a bad thing... but people are using it poorly/inappropriatly.

A good example of this is what I see happening to a lot of people on these boards. People are making a VIDEO of their hack rather than just making a screenshot. Now... I agree that some things cannot be adequately captured in a screenshot. But 95% of things can be. The other 4.9% could be captured in a series of 2 or 3 screenshots (or even an animated screenshot -- if you prefer -- which I don't).

I just downloaded and watched a video of a hack where someone changed the text color. The video was 2.2 MB. A screenshot would've been maybe 5 KB. And "Hey look what I did. I changed the text color under so and so circumstances! Isn't that awesome?" is maybe about 130 bytes (I didn't actually count). Was a video really necessary?

Another thing I've seen on YouTube are these slideshows of still images. Still images. I guess they have accompanying BGM too, but that still seems somewhat ridiculous.

I've even seen videos that were purely audio. I'm not lying. A single, static, stationary image and accompanying audio. This blows my mind. What also blows my mind is how common it is!

It's gotten to point where people on IRC are talking about this song and I'm like "hey give me a link to that song so I can listen" and instead of a link to the song I get a link to some YouTube video that plays the song. So now if I want to listen to it... not only can I not just download it to my computer, but I also have to download a file that's 3x the size and 1/5th the quality.

I know what you're thinking. "So what". And to those of you on DSL/Cable/decent internet connections it doesn't really matter... since 6 or 7 MB or whatever those videos are fly by like nothing. But goddamn... some of us still don't have highspeed internet available. Not for lack of trying, either-- it simply isn't available everywhere (why it isn't available everywhere yet is another thing that blows my mind -- I mean they still bother to hook up phone lines to new houses they build... but not cable/DSL internet? What the hell is that... internet is like 1000x more important than a landline these days -- hell lots of people don't even use their landline. But that's a topic for another discussion).

So yeah. Use some consideration. Use your brain when uploading things to YouTube... or linking to thinks on YouTube. Ask yourself "Is this a video? Or is this a waste of my time?"
Thank you, Disch.

Very good points, and I agree wholeheartedly...

But some of those videos have links to MP3s , still, slideshows are stupid and annoying, especially when YouTube automatically recommends them for me because 1 tag matches up to a video I just watched ._.

Especially slideshows of... comics.... why not just upload them to a geocities, or shell out some money for a host or something?

I kind of agree, but at the same time, why is it that 95% of the ROM hacking community just happens to fall into that supposed minority of people who don't have high speed internet? It's suspicious is what it is.

An internet devoted to computing, in a sense, and there are so many people with dialup. Meanwhile, no other forums I frequent, which span from general interest to design to whatever, have I ever heard anyone complain about still being on dialup. Yet here I hear it all the time! Anyway.

Maybe because it's only an issue in the RH communities? If it's not a problem people aren't going to complain about it.

We can't really have a campaign against stupidity though. I guess the only way we can help out is by not participating in, or directing others to videos of such nature.

Having a video along with screenshots is OK. I think the absolute worst thing o youtube though is youtube poop. Especially when you're looking for a specific topic and you end up with that stupid, worthless, unfunny shit that more often than not hurts the ears.

It's obvious. People here are too poor to afford good internet and new games so they just remake their old ones.

Also for what it's worth, I personally found it very hard to use pictures to show off changes of turn based games that were mechanic related - videos were much easier.

I would post about exactly why this guy is horribly, violently wrong, but it wouldn't mean anything because the guy doesn't go here and wouldn't read it. Which is a bit sad, because he's horribly, violently wrong...

Eh, I find it a lot easier to look up and listen to songs on youtube, actually.

case in point, I just went to listen to Carol of the Bells. I was listening to it within 5 seconds using Youtube.

It might just be music in some cases (in this case it had video too), but damn, it's convenient. And that's what is most important to me - being able to actually just find what I"m looking for.

Agreed 100%. And it is not the responsibility of people who have good internet connections to cater to those who do not. If you do not have a good internet connection available in your areas, petition to providers - show them there's interest. "Not for lack of trying" my ass.

Only applies if you're a dependent.

Youtube is good for finding music videos too.

I dunno, I don't mind things being "Youtubed", and the dial-up users is a shrinking minority. Of course, it doesn't replace screenshots. (if it's a simple graphical hack, it's dumb to make a video out of it unless it's animated or something)

I'm so considering to make a youtube video with just a picture that is about 1 minute long with silence.

My current TAS video is a utter failure due to a fucking slowdown .AVI recording on my laptop. Playing FCE Ultra 0.98.28 won't run in my laptop at all and FCE Ultra X runs really slow. My laptop is the only one has sound audio while my desktop computer does not. ):

Why does my desktop runs my Emus perfectly than my laptop. At least some Emus I play on my laptop are slow.

Prevent sharing?

You don't want your hack to be advertised?

It's only for Tool-Assisanted Speed Runs only and certain BETA hack runs that made by another author.

That also includes Reimu Hakurei in Rockman 2 video I downloaded from IKA's webpage.
