I know board2 is kinda quiet, but I figure I'll try posting a question here before I go off and find a dedicated hardware forum somewhere, if only because I don't want to go through the trouble of registering at another board...
Anyway, though, simple question: does anyone know how much RAM Vista (specifically Home Premium 32-bit) can support? I've heard three or four gigs at most, and I presently have two but wonder if adding another one or two would be worth it. So, if anyone knows, just tell me and then I can get into the specifics of my computer's current specs or whatever else is relevant. Thanks. |

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, blackhole. And, yeah, the warning about Vista's about a year late. I was very cautiously considering taking a spin with Linux, but at the last moment I lost my nerve (and my confidence in my technical skills) and so went for something with a wider base. Maybe next time...
But anyway, what do you think of adding another 1GB? Would the move from 1 to 2GB have a visible impact, or would I be wasting my money? |

Ok then, to get specific, the most intensive task I use my computer for is gaming. (I also use it for miscellaneous homework/Internet/etc, but I imagine those tasks don't create the strain of, say, Oblivion on high settings.) So, a question that probably has a very obvious answer: would that extra GB be worth it for games? |

With Vista, you want 2GB at the absolute minimum, though I'd recommend going with 3-4GB, especially if you're a gamer or are into things like video processing and whatnot. Anything less than 2GB and you're going to have a lot of troubles. ____________________ |

This is what I have now. Should I just go for one more of those? |

Why not get 2 more of those and don't worry about it for a long time? |

"he will barely get to use anything of the last GB"
I fail to see how this can be the case when you use windows. |

My bad, I had completely forgotten we were talking to the only person still using 32-bit OS on a new computer. |

I mainly chose the 32-bit Vista over the 64-bit because there were reports of many games not working on the 64-bit version - and the only reason I built this computer was, indeed, to play games, so it seemed counter-intuitive to willingly cripple myself like that, regardless of any other factors.
So, one last question just so I have a solid answer before I go spend any money: should I get this? Is there anything else you need to know about my machine before you can give a definite answer? |

Well, 1 GB to surf on the Internet is more than enough. You may need more to play a game with settings in the carpet, but I'm not sure if it's justifiable only for that specific purpose. If you said you want to make video editing, that would be another story... |

Posted by TraxNo... Vista itself requires about 1GB just to run... ____________________ |

I think you missed the base of the question, Trax . I already have a computer with 2GB, and was thinking of adding 1GB. |

My mistake, though, looks like it's out of stock. I hate to be a mooch, and I don't want to ask anyone to do the footwork for me, but do you (this is a general "you" - anyone who'd be generous enough) could find me something comparable? Something else I could use instead of waiting for Newegg to stock that particular part again? Because, while I did build my computer myself, I really just did the labor - all the knowledge and expertise was gleaned from generous strangers, and I really don't know what I'm doing on my own. Heh heh.
Edit: I was struck by a moment of common sense and just searched for it from a different merchant instead of my beloved Newegg. Thanks for the advice, everyone. |
