So, I bought an R4 for my Nintendo DS a while back, and a 2GB SanDisk MicroSD chip to go with it. I have about 1 GB of stuff on it. I connect it to the computer through a "MicroSD-USB 2.0" adapter thingy with no company logo on it, and it works like any other type of flash memory device.

Aside from ROMs and savedata (which I would REALLY like to keep, if possible, but is not mandatory to my survival), I had a bunch of MP3's and 2 reports for my Japanese class.

Well, I record my class lectures and download them to the computer normally, also. Now, I was running the program that downloads the lectures to my computer (XP), and at the same time I was running WavePad to batch convert some ~11 OGG music files (directly off the MicroSD) to MP3's for higher compatibility. I don't know what went wrong, but somehow my computer froze in the middle of this, and I had to reset the computer. I run my reccorder program and find that everything's fine, so I resume downloading the lectures.

But upon plugging in the MicroSD to the computer, it opened and even let me navigate the folders for about 5 seconds, then it gave me a "Please insert disk into drive X". It did this every time I unplugged it and plugged it back in. So I went to a different computer in the house with XP, and it was fine, until I tried to copy files off the thing, in which it said "Cannot copy file [X], the parameter is incorrect".

So I load up the MicroSD on my DS, and I can play all but 3 music files properly, those 3 would crash the DS so I deleted them off the MSD. (it actually let me do that!) I found that one of my Japanese reports was corrupted, too, so I deleted it. (thank goodness I already turned it in!) Everything else seemed ok, but it randomly gave me errors when I tried to copy the files off the MSD. Some files came off fine, but others would freeze the computer and "disconnect" the MSD.

So I decided to backup all the data on there to my computer, and format the MSD. I tried copying the data onto the computer, and it wasn't letting me, as usual. Tried it on the other computer, no luck. After a few more tries, it eventually wouldn't load at all. Playing it on my DS crashes the DS on the first loading screen, too. Since I can't even get my computer to recognize that the MicroSD is even plugged in, I can't even take the easy way out and format the drive.

Now, I hate to delete my Japanese reports (one's already gone), and I hate even more to lose all the hard work I've put into the save files for my DS games. The music is replaceable, but hard to come by; the reports can be re-downloaded off the local college's website (I think), where I uploaded them; the games can be re-downloaded. What I'm upset about is that I will probably have to lose all the time I've put into various DS games, and I may have bricked my 2 GB MicroSD.

What should I do from here to see if it's truly bricked, and if it isn't, how might I go about recovering my files? Any other suggestions you guys can think of would also be appreciated; thanks.

If you can find -a- computer you can plug it into, try running chkdsk. Also, what condition are the contacts in? It may end up that you'll just have to run chkdsk or some other utility, and, unfortunately, have to simply erase and re-format the entire card. And that's if you're lucky.

When I plug the MSD-USB adapter into the computer, an extra disk drive appears on the computer, but is empty. (it has always done that) It's when I stuck the MSD into the adapter that Windows would perform its autoplay stuff and actually open the folder, and it won't do that at all. When I plug in the adapter into either XP computer or my Vista laptop, an empty drive shows up and no autoplay stuff occurs. When I attach the MSD to the adapter, nothing whatsoever happens. Wiggling it and trying to re-insert it are useless.

I have a Kingston MicroSD-to-SD adapter, which I tried using; when I plugged it with the MSD into the XP computer, nothing happened, then when I did anything whatsoever like highlight the drive containing the MSD or click it, eplorer would freeze until I removed it so it would give the message "Please insert a disk into drive X". Nothing showed up at all on my laptop. (all my ccomputers have built-in SD slots)

I think after that reset the MicroSD took a permanent turn south. I'll probably have to get a regular USB stick for my reports and music now, and a new MicroSD for my DS.

I'm probably going to just put the MicroSD away somewhere in case someone can resurrect it someday. Thanks for the input, Sukasa; I'll definitely do that should I ever get it to load someday. Do you have any idea why this might have happened in the first place, though? As far as I know, WavePad was in the middle of loading a song off the MSD when it started acting funky, and I would normally suppose that simply reading data off it wouldn't harm it...?

Could have been any number of things. It would have been easy for it to have just been a bum card, and if you got it online, could, I suppose, have also been a cheap knockoff. Anyways, try plugging it in, and when the drive shows up go to command promt and run chkdsk on it (IIRC, the command is chkdsk /f X:, though it might be /r)

Sounds like my problem, which needs reformatting.

Mine appeared bricked, but reformatting it did wonders. Since then, I keep backups before writing to mine.
