Since this did work once before on Incarnation two, I'm going to use Juggling Joker's old method here from SMW hacking back then.

OKAY, LISTEN UP!

If you're going to make a thread here, try and add the following into the thread title as needed, so that it's a little easier to sort out the morass of threads that are going to inevitably sprout up.

[56K] - If the thread contains or is likely to contain a large number of images or youtubes, add this to the thread to try and warn people with slower connections

[HOWTO] - Got a great tutorial? Add this to the thread name! If enough [HOWTO]s get posted, then a thread with links to all of them may become possible!

[QUESTION] - Need help with something a little too advanced for the help thread? Add this to the thread title!

[RELEASE] - This should really be obvious.

[UTILITY] - Does the thread contain a new utility? Use this tag!

[SPRITE] - Thread is custom sprite related

[MUSIC] - Thread is custom music related

[GFX] - Thread is GFX related

[DEMO] - This too- got a demo link? Post this.

[SS],[VIDEO] - Again, if you have screenshots or videos, tag the thread with these!

[SUGGESTION] Got a suggestion for the SMW Hacking forum? Add this to the thread name!

[ASM] - If the thread contains code or is programming-related, add this to the thread title.

EXAMPLES:

Mario's Wild Ride [SS] [RELEASE] - Someone made a game, released it, and tagged the thread that there were screenshots and a link to the ips.

Making Mario jump differently [ASM] [QUESTION] - The thread title says it all.

Got any other tag ideas? Post Them!

Seems like a good idea, although I don't know to which extent it will be applied by the forum's users. Another way to go (though a little more technical) would be to integrate the categories as a forum functionality. When you start a thread, you can select a category from a pull-down menu or checkboxes or whatever. Such threads appear with an icon (or a tag) that specifies the category, and this makes the threads browsable using visual cues...

What irritates me most are the threads that have meaningless titles, such as "Hey, guys" or "I'm bored...". These threads should be renamed or deleted...

So... What brought this on? I didn't think there was much posting going on to begin with.

Is this even required anymore? The amount of people with dial-up is... not many. Especially considering a broadband connection is cheaper than dial-up in some parts of the world.

There still are a few around, so for their sake it's probably best to leave that in.

It overlaps with [SS] and [VIDEO], in my opinion...

Not really, actually. A 56k warning is best placed on threads with at least 1-5 MB of images/video. (the large range is because I don't really remember what dialup was like. Yay for DSL!)

Well, at least this will help prevent confusion...
I can't think what a newcomer would do at the sight of ASM...

5MB = 1024x5 = 5120kb
5120kb ÷ 2.5kb* = 2048 seconds¡
2048 sec. ÷ 60 = 34.13 min.

Roughly a half hour to get 5 MB.
Yes, dial-up blows.

I'd personally say anything that takes longer than 10 minutes to load° (something like 1.3MB) should be tagged.

*The most consistent speed I would get with dial-up.
¡I'm such a nice guy I avoided using sub-scripted numbers to prevent confusion.
°If you consistently use dial-up, you develop kick-ass patience.

Basically, any thread with over 1MByte of content needs [56K].

...I had at least 5 KB per second when I used dial-up.

Funny though, reason we switched to broadband was because... broadband was being much cheaper! Dial-up here is probably the most expensive way you can connect to the internet.

At least it was somewhat reliable, and the latency wasn't too bad.

How many 56K users are even on this board?

me, for one.

I agree that the [56K] should be used in cases of "image overload"
