So I was staring at my keyboard today, and it occurred to me that I haven't used my caps lock key in months, maybe years. I also got to thinking how useless it was and the wasted space that could otherwise be used for something a bit more useful.

So here's the point of this thread: What can I do with it? I'm thinking I'd like to remap it to another key, or maybe even a key combination if that's possible. I just don't have any good ideas of what to remap it to. Has anyone here remapped their caps lock key? If so, to what?

The best idea I've had so far is to remap it to the "browser forward" key that appears on some keyboards. I regularly use Backspace to go back, but I don't currently have a one-key press for forward.

Suggestions?

Last view: 4846 days 		I've had Caps Lock switched with Backspace for several months on my laptop. Only required a few small changes to the registry, though I can't remember exactly what they were. It helps my typing speed a bit since I don't have to stretch my hand off the home row.

Last view: 1541 days 		There are a dozen keys I don't use, one of them being insert. If anything, it just causes me a lot of trouble. You could remap it to lock your PC or something, with a program like LockMyPC.

Open Regedit and go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]. Be careful not to edit the "Keyboard Layouts" key. If you want the remapping to apply on a user-specific basis, log in as that user (you need to be an administrator in XP Home or have registry editing privileges, usually a power user or administrator, in XP Pro) and use [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout].

Click on Edit->New->Binary Value and name it "Scancode Map" without the quotes. The content of the key will depend on what behavior you want to assign to the Caps Lock key. I simply set the Caps Lock key to function as the Left Shift key. This way, I get caps while it′s down, no caps when it′s up. This has no affect on the Left Shift key ­ it continues to work normally.

In order to remap Caps Lock to Left Shift, double click the Scancode Map key and enter the following binary values: "00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,2A,00,3A,00,00,00,00,00" without the quotes or the commas and click OK. See Figure 1 for the result.

Looking at this, it seems to be the way I did it before. The current value at that location in my registry is 0000000000000000030000003A000E000E003A0000000000.

My map, btw, is 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 5B E0 00 00 00 00.

Note that besides the Fn/Ctrl switch, I also have a disabled Win key.
