After attending a belated Independence Day cookout and fireworks show, we came home to find that the base station for the cordless phone did not appear to have power. After making sure that it was plugged in to a working outlet and seeing that it still did not work, I figured that it would be a good idea to check and see if the internet connection was up.

When I got to my computer, I found the computer off and the lights on the DSL modem in an unusual state. First, I tried to power cycle the modem, but it would not turn on. Next, I tried to turn my computer on but it would hang during the POST.

I opened up the modem and found burn marks inside. I removed the NIC that the modem was connected to and found that it too had burn marks on it. Even with the NIC removed the computer would hang during the POST.

So now I'm using dialup on the laptop while the phone company sends a new DSL modem, and I guess I'll need to get a new motherboard. I see the same model I have cheaply available on ebay, but there is nearly a week left on it.

OUCH.
I feel for you though, back before I could afford anything decent, I would tinker with the old computers in my Dad's shop. I accidentally dropped one of the only pentium IIIs (the other one was in the "good shop computer"), and was stuck using pentium IIs from then on.
Again though, that really blows.

It turns out that the model of motherboard that I currently have goes for a lot more than I expected. Identical and very similar models appear to be a popular target of eBay snipers. I managed to out snipe another bidder for a similar, but not identical, model.

Unplugging would be a much bigger help, it would remove the physical connection... And will you please quit Typing Like This?

I've been lucky enough to not have to deal with KRRRRSTZAP*boom* with my electronics, though mom's microwave was blowed when those twats at the electric company disconnected the power without warning.

Don't you hate when those assholes do that?

I mean, at least warn us first.
