Alright, so I have a desktop sitting in my room, running XP, perfectly fine... except the CD drive doesn't seem to be working. I'd like to wipe it and reinstall XP, but I really can't without the CD drive. It's also not connected to the internet, so I can't just download an ISO and repair. I myself think it's just missing the drivers. Any solutions you guys can think of? ____________________ |

Well, one option you have is to take out the hard drive and connect it into a computer that does have internet, and download the ISO that way. Another option is to just get a new CD-ROM drive, since CD-ROM drives use standard generic drivers
To be sure, check the CD-ROM drive in device manager. if it says it's working fine, the drive can't read properly. If it's missing, the drive isn't connected properly. If there's a problem, then it should be self-explanatory. |

It doesn't seem to be connected properly, it doesn't show up in device manager.
I opened it up to check, but never having taken apart a computer, I can't make heads or tails of it. :/ ____________________ |

okay, in the back of the CD-ROM unit, there will usually be 2 or three cables. First off is the power cable, this has -four- thick wires connected to it, red, yellow, black, and another black. Secondly, there's a wide, tape-like cable, this connects the drive to the motherboard, you need to make sure it's seated correctly at both (possibly all three for some setups) ends. Lastly, sometimes there's a tiny cable that runs to the sound card. At this point, said cable is irrelevant. |

Yeah, the one connecting it to the motherboard was loose.
Now I just have to find a good way to connect it to the internet from down here... ____________________ |

If you have a wireless router, a good wireless card is probably all you need, assuming your CD-ROM drive is working properly again. I'd recommend D-Link's wireless card line, myself. |
