What of the odd predicament in Top Secret Area? I've noticed before that if you make Yoshi stick his tongue out at just the right spot (it's right below the block containing a Yoshi Egg), you'll hear that familiar "punch" noise, as if Yoshi's trying to eat something that isn't there, but he can't even grab it. What's up with that?

The tongue touches with the "Side Exit Enabled" sprite. It's not edible and does therefore play the sound.

I thought the SEE sprite was all the way near the top of the screen, though.

No, Smallhacker's right- The Sprite is right there where Mario enters the level from. That explains it all. Maybe that's why Nintendo put the thing at the top of all other levels they used it on?

Edit: Though, that doesn't explain why they put it there in the first place, and ONLY in that one single level... No other level has the sprite in a location Yoshi could get to...

I found that odd too. Except for the special sprites that depends on it's Y coordinate (such as the Koopa kids), this level and Yoshi's House are the only levels where the special sprites aren't placed at the very top.

There's also an invisible object that Yoshi can't eat in Yoshi's Island 3. It's yet unclear why.

That one's easily heard by going to this spot:

There's nothing there in LM, so there's no real reason why that's happening...

Is it just me, or are most of those directly nearby those rotating platforms?

I'd be willing to bet that the platforms are what Yoshi is trying to eat.

There's a similar uneatable object in Top Secret Area. I checked in LM, and it was the Enable Side-Exit sprite.

The grand irony in this, is that sprite is what started this whole discussion in the first place

Probably just shoddiness.

The Top secret level seems to be a level used for beta testing originally, and the dev team decided that they could as well keep it in.

Eh. Consider, also, the chances of this cropping up during playtesting; slim to none. Hell, we really only found out about it by pure accident, I'd guess

Also, amkes me wonder. What happens if you make the sprite edible, and eat it?

Does the level cease being side-exit enabled?

I would kill to get my hands on the SMW source code, and do a word search for comments with "HACK" or the Japanese equivalent in it.

I'd be more inclined to think it'd be called "hotfix" or something similar... But I guess that'd be beating around the bush. =P
I know of at least one developer that uses "HACK" and at one point included a running tally of it's use in the source code in a public blog of a developer, which was pretty funny.

(If I remember correctly, the game was Stranglehold for the 360/PS3 and the count was 86 at the time)

Even better, if you'd set the side exit enabled sprite to be the sprite that Yoshi lays after eating amounts of Berries.

Haha, someone needs to do this. It would be so funny.

Hrm, I still have doubts on it... Is the sprite X/Y dependent?

The sprite is X dependent, and enables the Yoshi's House smoke at even X positions.

That said, it would be interesting, but I doubt the level would cease being side-exit enabled if the sprite's like the other command sprites that scroll offscreen while their effects are still felt. Dunno how one would test this though.

No. It remains side-exit enabled until one returns to the overworld.
(If you enter a pipe/door to another room, it will still be enabled.)

That's confusing. Why wouldn't they just set the sprite to self-destruct, then?

This game really is a multitude of lame hacks and patches...

because it's also used to generate the smoke and the fireplace in Yoshi's house?
