I know I read about this in another thread, but it appeared a little out of topic to me, so I thought I'd post a new thread about it, just in case anybody has any input for the matter, they can just talk about it directly in here.

Apparently, there are two unused Yoshis in SMW (don't know if this is true or not) which are still in the game. Which of course leads to the following question: would it be possible to hack in two new Yoshis?

Now, I'm not a kickass n00b pwnr when it comes to programming (yet ) but I am a man of ideas. And ideas are the ignition to the greatest feats :p. Anyways, enough with the ranting.

If this were possible, let's bring in fabled Yoshis from other games. Like a black one and a white one (ebony... ivory... living in perfect harmony...). The black one could have the property of spitting out a shelled enemy as a Bullet Bill (I know, it'd be like the Red Yoshi who spits out 3 fireballs, but Bullet Bills can take out a slew of enemies that fire can't kill). The white one, can become invincible (as if you had a star activated) while you're holding a shelled enemy in your mouth. I know this ability seems broken, but maybe this Yoshi can be placed in a super secret level that's very hard to reach or get to.

Anyways, that's an idea I thought I'd toss up in the air to see if it's possible to bring to fruition. Any other ideas?

Maybe you could tell us where you got this information?

Probably referring not to the fact that there are "unused" Yoshis, but that a couple of valid (yet not supported) values for the color of Yoshi that Mario's riding slipped in.

More Yoshis? Possible.
Easy? No.
Someone will do it for you? Sir and or madam, you would have better luck winning the Tibetan lottery without ever buying a ticket.

Well, it is was possible, obviously it wouldn't be easy. And if I were to win the Tibetan lottery, the prize would probably be a dr (a dr is not doctor, but a kind of llama that lives in the Himalayas, and is pronounced like grrr, only with a 'd' )

Edit:

I'll see if I remember where I saw this information. Sorry that I didn't type it in, so I edited my message. I'll see if I can find it for ya. But yeah, it was most likely a color change reference that I misunderstood. Still would've been cool to add more Yoshis to SMW

If your only intrested in the color....

Just one pic from my upcoming game, Super Mario Eternity: Secret of Forever Isle. Now tell me, what's different about Yoshi? (Not that he's blue, that's obvious...)

Not sure about Yoshi, but I don't think it was that good of a move to take out the ground texture...

All I did was make the texture the same color as the dirt part. It's supposed to be a beach level, but I don't have any ExGFX for it. Maybe I'll use the cave ground for it because the texture is closer together.

As for Yoshi, notice that the red, green, blue and yellow palettes of the Koopas are the same as they always are. Yet Yoshi, who uses the green pallette, is a cyan instead. See it now?

Posted by FirePhoenix0
Basically, I changed Yoshi's palette using Tweaker to one of the changing sprite palettes, aka one of the palettes Buzzy Beetles and Eeries use. Basically, using custom palettes, I can have Yoshis of any color I want in any level. So far I have Cyan Yoshi, Light Green Yoshi and Crimson Yoshi.

...Then you should PM FP. D:

Looks like I'm needed here.

Well, I tried changing Yoshi's standard palette to Pallete E using Tweaker. That way I could use one of the lesser used palettes to have multiple Yoshi colors and not interfere with other sprite palettes. However, it seems that doing so makes Yoshi act a little strange in some cases, so I returned him to his normal palette (A) and instead opened up his graphics in YY-CHR and recolored him to use the empty black palettes on the right half of the sprite palettes instead. Whenever I needed a set of Yoshi colors, all I had to do was change the black palettes to whatever colors I needed, I never had to interfere with the standard sprite palettes and no coding/hex changes were ever needed.

Of course, Yoshi's abilities are all the same as Green Yoshi's abilities, seeing as all the recolored Yoshis are are recolored Green Yoshis.

As a bonus, this also allows you to change the color of Yoshi's shoes!

Yeah, Nintendo has a way of doing random things like giving dinosaurs brown cobbler shoes. Thanks for the insight, now! Now I know you can only change his colors and not the abilities he has. That would've been kickass, though

That's actually quite insightful.
Maybe I should change the shoes in my hack too.

I actually ran some tests with changing Yoshi's palette with Tweaker and seeing what happens to his abilities a while back, with some interesting results. Take a look:

G,R,B,Y refers to the color of the Koopa Shell being eaten.

Palette 8: (Basically a copy of the Blue Default)

G: Fly
R: Fly/Fire
B: Fly
Y: Fly/Sand

-------
Palette 9: (Basically a copy of the Yellow Default)

G: Sand
R: Sand/Fire
B: Sand/Fly
Y: Sand

-------
Palette A: (Yellow Default)

G: Sand
R: Sand/Fire
B: Sand/Fly
Y: Sand

-------
Palette B: (Blue Default)

G: Fly
R: Fly/Fire
B: Fly
Y: Fly/Sand

-------
Palette C: (Red Default)

G: Fire
R: Fire
B: Fire/Fly
Y: Fire/Sand

-------
Palette D: (Green Default)

G: Normal
R: Fire
B: Fly
Y: Sand

-------
Palette E: (Strange mix here. Blue shells do nothing.)

G: Normal
R: Fire
B: Normal
Y: Fly/Sand

-------
Palette F: (Strange mix again. Looks like an incomplete Yellow default. Note that blue and yellow are the same.)

G: Normal
R: Fire/Sand
B: Sand
Y: Sand

Wasn't there some sort of table some guy found that determines which color of Yoshi gives what kind of abilities for which shells?

Granted it's been a long time since I've even touched the most basic of ASM, but that might be a good place to start.

Maybe the ability coding is mixed together with the pallet coding.

I don't know if there's necessarily a table, but what I posted would seem to be the same thing.

This looks interesting. Maybe if we find the abilities in hex (or ASM) we could give him a few different combonations of ablities.
One thing though. What about the flashing shell? What is it considered?
I'll play with it, see what i come out with.

Good idea, someone should add a palette animation and see what happens...

That's a good idea, but I don't know what altering the abilities of Yoshi might f*ck up in the rest of the game's data. I mean, if you alter it directly via its ASM location.

All yoshi's use the same sprite number. Pretty sure the palette is what determines the abilities.
