I've been wanting to show off more of Dark Mario (Super Mario Bros. 3 hack), but I can't until I'm ready. There is still a lot of work that I need to do, but when the time comes, you will not be disappointed in the next trailer.

What I can say, without showing anything, is that the graphics have gotten a complete overhaul, redesigned from the ground up. And they are much better looking, and of higher quality. Level designs are awesome. One of the levels so far has multiple paths you can take to reach the end of it. Oh, and you'll no longer be taking Goal Cards to end the level. I'm using the Goal Card system for something else...

Now, for this new ASM feature. It's an idea I'm thinking of doing, but I need some opinions. I already have a couple of more features that I'm still working on (they will be revealed in the next trailer), but this new thing is called the...

Realistic Life System

Basically, I take out the lives concept. And give Mario an EKG. Similar to Resident Evil, the more Mario gets hurt, the more the EKG turns to Danger status.

RAM Address:

5 = Perfect Health
4 = Fine
3 = Okay
2 = Caution
1 = Danger
0 = DEAD

Once you are dead, the game is over. The lives system is history, but you have health units. At one of the health units, probably 1, you will turn to small Mario. If you get hit then, you are finished. Oh, and when you die, it will say, "YOU DIED". I even thought about adding blood to the game, but I don't know if I want to do that yet. I have the addresses I need to add blood.

Now, what does this mean? You need to be extra careful with what you do. And I'm telling you right now, this game is hard. I've been testing my levels, and they are good designs. Basically, if you plan on rushing through the levels, you will die. Plain and simple. But if you take your time, you should be okay.

There will be things that can be used to replenish your health units. The only problem I see, is the lava for example. But I won't worry about it too much. Just means you have to be careful. There is a new ASM feature, which I'm halfway done with, which I don't want to reveal, because I might use it in the actual game. I will give you a hint about it though, its a new weapon for Mario.

Dark Mario is shaping up nicely. But who knows when I'll be ready to show off something. I don't think I'll be ready for at least a few weeks.

So, the Realistic Life System, good idea or bad idea?

I think it's pretty much awesome, à la Mario 64. I'd say from experience that it's easy to render the game too easy because of the life energy principle. Mario in Mario 64 was quite invincible in that matter...

The life system might be a good idea if you give the player a chance to save occasionally, like at every fortress or something.

And what about bottomless pits?

If you fall into a pit, you are dead. Plain and simple. Hence, the "Realistic Life System."

Ja, correct. Dark Mario is a hack of SMB3.

I recall seeing a screenshot of it. :V

Sounds like it would encourage the use of savestates...

Yeah, I think completely doing away with lives is a little too brutal, but I still like the life system. I say you still go with it, but at least give the player lives. I don't really remember how the continue system works in SMB3 though. I haven't had a continue in that game in a looong time... but I guess if you have unlimited continues, that's cool too.

I like it, but as stated before completely removing lives would make it a bit too hard.

Perhaps you should give the player the option of saving after every level, like in SM64 (which has a similar system but with lives).

I like the idea, but give the player at least 3 lives.

Try using AsM magic that when you continue after a game over, you don't have to start playing through all the levels again, pass through the levels you already finished.
