I did a research project in high school and used an encyclopedia as a source, but it was only one of eight sources and I had a lot more citations from each of the magazine and newspaper articles than the encyclopedia. Of course, it was a high-school project to show us how to do research, so we needed X sources of Y different types.

I generally use Wikipedia to get the general idea of something, then follow the external links to get more information, for example, if I have to do a research project for a class.

Wikipedia is really nice to just learn the gist of something. Sometimes when I look up something, I have trouble figuring out exactly what it means. Going on Wikipedia almost always gives me the basic idea right off the start. It's great.

Wikipedia is amazing.

It cut down the amount of time it took for me to define 150 terms from 8 hours to 4-5

I realize that all of the information in Wiki may not be 100% accurate 100% of the time, but it is still pretty groundbreaking in what it does.

Step 1: search Wikipedia.
Step 2: Copy to your liking.
Step 3: Paste in MSWord, 'keep text only'.
Step 4: Surgically remove and edit content to your liking.
Step 5: Autosummarize if necessary.
Step 6: Profit.

Never failed me once

For any serious work, Wikipedia is often a bad idea. For anything else, user discretion advised.

Also, some schools may block Wikipedia because Wikipedia is not censored.

I created Wikipedia. My roommate stole it from me when I was sleeping. I am the real Wikipedia.

Too bad they forgot to block the Internet, which is clearly for porn.

This is what the image parodies. Wikipedia is a drug.

It's addictive and possibly also harmful.

I think Wikipedia for research is best if you find the article, then check out the sources it references for yourself. That way you have creditable sources and can come to your own conclusions.

I dislike the hegemony used to decide what stays and what doesn't, though.

And certain videogames, such as Civilization. My dad has been a Civ addict for 13 years now.

Wikipedia is win for foreign language practice. Assuming you know enough of the language to be able to understand most of the article, you can pick up vocabulary and sentence structure by example. Far more often than not, the articles I've seen were written with proper grammar. I keep meaning to make a daily habit of reading German Wikipedia for just this reason.

I'm fluent enough to understand an average Wikipedia article pretty well. I studied German in high school and took some challenging courses in college, including a class on medieval literature taught entirely in German. I haven't used the language since that class, which was 7 years ago, so I'm out of practice. I'm also at a point where the best way to improve my fluency is to absorb mass quantities of German. I know most of the grammar rules and whatnot, but I lack the vocabulary of someone with native fluency, and I'd much rather pick that up naturally through reading than sit down and memorize words. I have a wide English vocabulary, and I learned most of it through context, too.

I am taking German right now at school, and trying to learn Japanese via Wikipedia.

My school also offers Spanish and French as well
