Lately there has been a lot of activity around this fork of Mupen64. I have been following it with interest because I'm running 64 bit Linux and the original Mupen64 would not work without setting up a chroot jail with a 32 bit userspace in it. 64 bit support was the first change made and the original purpose of the fork.

There is now a Windows release of the updated emulator. While it does not have all the features that Project 64 does, and I rarely use Windows, it is still exciting to see progress on a publicly available N64 emulator.

I've been using Mupen64-amd64 on 64-bit Linux... how does this compare to that?

Edit: Ah, I see that this is actually renamed from the same project I mentioned, so it's really not fundamentally different after all. (I don't really keep on on N64 emulation news, I just found a working emulator when I got Ubuntu amd64 and stuck with it)

Project 64 is, and always will be the best N64 emulator.

However, since 32 bit programs seem to be all I'm running, I feel I'm putting my processor to waste. Do you know if this is still being actively worked on? I know it's only been a month since your post, but projects have died faster.

It is still being actively worked on. In fact, a early version of netplay has been posted in one of the branches. The new netplay should be better than in the old Mupen64k once the bugs get worked out.

I would not count on Project 64 staying better forever. For the first time, there has been significant development on a N64 emulator using open source development methods, not just an open source license. Unlike every other N64 emulator project, anyone can get the latest version and test it, make relevant suggestions(suggestions for PJ64 are often said to already be in the private beta), and submit patches. As a result, Mupen64plus will attract more attention, mindshare, and developers long before the next public PJ64 release. Already, several features in or planned for the private PJ64 beta are being publicly worked on.

The number of developers with commit access alone already appears to exceed the size of any private development team of an N64 emulator, so even if some developers lose interest, the project can still go on.
