No seriously, I want a IRC client that doesn't suck.

But I yet have to find a IRC client that doesn't make me groan. I want something similar to mIRC at least, or possible to configure like it. I have no need for scripting.

I stopped using mIRC a long time ago, and I can't even remember why. Nowadays I use Chatzilla if I need to use multiple servers and Miranda if I only need to be on one server.

Chrome-based Firefox plugins (which is what Chatzilla is, wasn't it?) always yielded an extraordinary ammount of CPU usage and general Firefox lag for me... as far as multi-IM clients' IRC support goes, I found it to be insufficient in Trillian's and GAIM's case, though I don't know about Trillian's.

I do really consider mIRC a great piece of software as far as being stable and supporting stuff you need goes, though its encoding support is, admittedly, comparatively weak and the proprietariness brings bad karma...

HydraIRC seemed like it had some potential back in the days, but I think it's proprietary as well. Linux users love Xchat, but I all but share their enthusiasm. irssi is nice for a command-line client, but, yeah, command-line.

Just write your own.

Well why don't you like mIRC, and which mIRC version are you using?

I still have that VB bot lying around. It'd make a fine base.

It's hard to recommend something different if we don't know why you don't like the one you're already using in the first place.

I've considered X-Chat far superior to mIRC in every way for a long time...

Me and Bouche are coding an IRC client. Wait 5 years.

I'll only use your IRC client if there's a splash screen on startup that shows a creepy picture of your face on it.

Also, Firefox, since when is "startup" not a word?

I'll agree with this on some level. It might be the difference between our machines...

It never causes me lag but it consistently eats up a lot of RAM and CPU time, but fortunately I have enough excess of both that it doesn't matter to me. It is part of the reason I upgraded to 2GB of RAM though.

I have a implementation of the IRC protocol lying around in Java.

And I can easily make my own.

If it's that easy then why are you asking for a replacement?

Well it's just barebones really. It's not a whole client, just enough IRC API to write a simple bot. And I would have to take a close look at it's license before I use it for anything like that...

Well he could probably just hack that away.
