Apparently it's been possible for a while now. It's just for running homebrew right now, and the selection is limited, but possible future apps are things like Linux, or some sort of DVD player. The best part about it though is that all you need is a copy of Twilight Princess that you've played at least once, and an SD card.

You can check more out here: http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack
I got it running on my Wii, so it's super easy to do. I'm normally kind of an RTard when it comes it this stuff.

Ah, finally. I suspected it would be possible. I saw it before, but it required some Gamecube SD adapter thing. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

There's some GC homebrew that got ported over that still requires the adapter thing, like the Genesis emulator, but hopefully as new programs come out, the need for that thing will be reduced. I'm pulling for the DVD player to get made, that would be perfect.

Hopefully indeed.

So done any fun? I want to see screenshots!

Its possible since a little while, It's just not 100% reliable.
Performing buffer overrun on your Wii is a little dangerous if it goes wrong.
I'll wait a little more before modding mine to make sure that it doesnt have much chance to ruin my Wii.

It's the same method as the psp, but not too much up to date.
I guess we better watch out for the Wii updates too.

Bit of an update here. (Well... kinda huge...)
Hacked channels are possible (Emulator channels, homebrew loaders, etc.), Wiiware/VC can be installed, emulators with Front SD support.

Forum with all the info you need.

Not to mention that this is on it's way. Once this gets released, the team that is making it is releasing the tools to make custom icons and banners for .wad files that you install. That's good news for rom hackers because that means you can create channels for your hacks that look semi-professional.

Not to say you can't do some of that now. You can already inject any rom you want into a downloaded VC title (supports .wad format) that is on the same console (if it's an N64 rom, you need an N64 VC title). So you can already have Rom Hacks working on the Wii's native emulators, but right now the channel on the Wii menu will display the original VC title, not the game that's actually on it. In the near future you'll be able to actually make the menu display whatever you want it to.

Here's the rom injector by the way http://www.nes-hacks.com/auto-injectuwad-injector-v3/27/

There's also region-free Wiiware available, so all the JP and EU games that are unreleased in America are available.

Injecting is great, but until further progress is made, most games are unplayable (Banjo-Kazooie... )

I thought Europa would have the least releases out of those... and Europeans being the one who would have the most use for it.

Any reports of people bricking their Wii's when attempting homebrew?

The only bricking I've seen so far is when people try to code their own banners for the wii menu, hence why I'm waiting for the tools that come with homebrew channel to come out. It looks like people aren't really releasing stuff until they know it won't mess the wii up.

**EDIT**
Homebrew Channel has been released. It looks nice. I haven't tried it out yet, but when I do I'll let everyone know how well it works or if I end up bricking my Wii. You can get it here http://hbc.hackmii.com/

Homebrew Channel is great, got most of my apps working with it. No bricking (well, so far) and my Wii can still connect to WC24. Apparently the only thing people have experienced is being blocked from online and a banned MyNintendo account when trying to download VC or Wiiware after installing a hacked ticket file.

Time for a bump of this topic.

It seems nintendo is playing Hardball against the homebrew installations of programs with the latest Wii update.

At least this time however it doesn't seem they're making any pithy attempts to justify it behind a tiny feature update - seems they actually want people to want to update this time. :o

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Wii_System_Updates

So bets on how long it's taken before they're taken to the cleaners again?

At least it seems like it only blocks homebrew channel from installing, and not actually deleting it.

I guess Nintendo don't want controversy with bricking Wii's or something.

Hahahaha.

Last time I used this, the homebrew channel wasn't actually released.
Haven't installed it yet.

While it's quite safe, I think I won't exactly install it on my family Wii.

I do plan to test out the world of Wii homebrewing when I got my own console however.

To be honest, half my use of the HBC is just to use my Wii like a Gameboy player so I don't have to plug in my Gamecube. ;

The other half is just for Snes games.

I've just installed the Homebrew channel. It's super awesome. All I have on it now is a SNES and a NES emulator. (Which I promptly filled with Megaman 2-6.)

I'm going to go look for some neat apps.
