Yeah, I know... I made a thread about Firefox 3 beta 2 last december but wooh.

For anyone who thinks Firefox 2 takes way too much memory, I would recomend to try out Firefox 3 beta 4. Despite being a beta, I find it quite usable... and it takes much less memory too. Less than the other browsers too!.

Only problem I found was some extensions breaking, but more and more extensions updated rather recently to support the beta. And the only one that didn't update for me... I just enabled with the nightly testing tools.

...Wow. Firefox beat Opera in memory usage? Awesomely amazing (or amazingly awesome, if you prefer). I might just switch back to Firefox once they put out the final release (I stick with stable releases now because Opera 9.5b permacrashed (I can't even uninstall it )).

That's interesting news indeed, considering that memory usage was one of my main concerns with Firefox (I still use it clenching my teeth though) so far. How's the porting of plugins coming along though (assuming any is done before release candidate stage at all)?

My main plugins:

Web Developer Toolbar, Stylish, and Greasemonkey are ported over... if that tells you anything.

I would call those extensions.

Technically a Extension is a type of plugin, but in the case of firefox extensions are stuff that extends the browser while the plugins are for handling embedded content.

All my extensions works fine anyway.

I use:
DownThemAll!
Firefox Showcase
Greasemonkey
Image Zoom
Nightly Tester Tools
Noscript
PDF download

All of those work in this beta.

For me, the most important ones are Web Developer Toolbar, DownThemAll, AnEC, Firebug, Perapera-kun (embedded hovering-based Japanese dictionary) and Modify Headers. How's the situation looking with those?

Why don't you try it out?

Installing Firefox 3 Beta 4 didn't ruin my Firefox 2 installation. In the last beta I switched from Firefox 3 beta 2 to Firefox 2 due to one of my important extensions didn't work at all... and apart from Mozilla Firefox 2 thinking it was starting for the first time, it didn't ruin anything.

Yep. Install them in seperate folders and they won't conflict with each other.

Beta 4 seems to be working well on my computer. Main thing I didn't like was how it virus-scanned every download (hello *.log won't crash my computer), but that can be disabled in about:config. Also nice is APNG support, even though nobody actually uses them yet.

APNG.... .... WHY?

I never heard of it before, but its purpose makes no sense. Why not MNG, a specification that's been around for years longer? Hell, Mozilla even supported MNG at one point but was removed for mysterious reasons.

APNG and MNG are both animated PNG formats. The main difference is that APNG will display (one frame) in otherwise incompatible viewers while MNG won't. Mozilla supports APNG, but MNG is the "official" format supported by the PNG group.

I am kind of surprised Firefox took out the MNG support, and that's too bad. Still, I must admit that the "backwards-compatible" factor of APNG makes me more likely to use it than MNG... not that I make images often.

Also, MNG is what Animation Shop (from Paintshop Pro) uses as its native format.

APNG sounds very similar to the GIF format, and how it animates...

Oh well, as long there's format to finally replace GIF animations, I'm happy.

There's been a format to replace GIF animations for the last 10 years, called MNG.

MNG is that old? oO

Heh, and I can see why APNG... being a much more recent format is almost controversional...

Beta 5 been out for a bit now, but that's probably obvious already to anyone who is doing the beta-testing.

I'll wait for the stable version, that way I won't have broken extensions each time I get the next beta version.
