I've figured out that one way or the other, I'm probably going to college, somewhere. And since I should have about 2 years of undergraduate done by end of high school, I can--hopefully--start working towards my major. Now, I was wondering, does anyone know about how a double major works? I might go for two of the most useless majors at once, econometrics and political sciences. That is, if I don't fall apart before then.

I'm going to be a music major. I got turned away from the musi cdepartments at U. Texas Austin and Pacific U. in California, but I've yet to hear word from the school itself...though, its doubtful I would go there simply for liberal arts purposes nless it was a sure thing I would be accepted as a music major the following year (in case you're curious, I had to apply to the schools themself, as well as the music departments which required an extenive audition as well as a portfolio of my compositions, being as that is my chosen major)

I HAVE heard back from the academic side of U. Texas San Antoni--while I'm still waiting for the results of my audition, I have a really good feeling about this. If THEY don't take me...either I go to San Antonio as liberal arts for a year, or I hope Berklee in Boston takes me. Though I really don't wanna go there...so...sick of jazz. Wanna branch out, be open to more styles than that.

Anyways, I just gotta keep my fingers crossed and hope everything works itself out.

Music majoring is the age-old, time-tested, useless major. So much so that it's not even useless. Now one doesn't see any abstracts on econometric political sciences, now do they?

I thought psychology was a useless major. You learn stuff, but you can't *use* it for anything practical.

My major is CS, which is probably one of the mose useful majors around. (maybe not, but still, it has a lot of possibilities in the future)

I would say the two most stereotypically useless majors are English and Philosophy.

...which is probably why the philosophy major is recommended in The sims 2 for people who want to follow the slacker career later in life. xD

I'm a computer science major because I always wanted to be a computer programmer. I think the only thing you do with a philosophy major is become a university teacher and torture future CS majors by giving them F's in the required philosophy classes.

I figure required writing and literature classes are normal (and I don't struggle with them at all, I just think they're boring), but is it normal to have 2 semesters of mandatory philosophy for a CS degree, or is my school just crazy?

I've heard it's an awesome major, but only for a master's degree or a Ph.D. Same thing for Physics and other such subjects. Oddly enough, I have more courses going towards a science-related field. Go figure.

Useless to you, maybe. But for me, music is something I really love and want to make a career out of. So, you know, having a degree in music seriously boosts my potential for doing anything worth while in that field..

So practice, refinement of technique, and dedication really don't mean anything without a degree?
It's that sort of stuffs that makes me sad.

No, it most certainly does. However, it probably won't means as much to say, a game company looking for someone to write for them, for example.

Just think of it like this. If you're a doctor, all the practice, refinement of technique, and dedication in the world wouldn't land you a job with out a degree from a medical school.
