Story about it. Album site. NIN band site.

In case you're having trouble getting the official free distribution (I was..), there's an official torrent for it too. Download it, it's awesome. Being under a CC license, the whole set can actually be redistributed, but I would rather support them by purchasing it

There's the first 9 tracks for free in 128 Kbps MP3s, $5 gives you downloads for all 36 songs in 320 Kbps MP3, FLAC, and/or Apple Lossless formats, $10 gives you two physical CDs, $75 gives you a data DVD with wave files to make remixing the album easier, $300 would get you a limited-edition including ultra-high-quality on Blu-ray and vinyls of the album. Obviously a very smart move Reznor is making

I find this an interesting and perhaps overdue development. However, I think, for musicians to be able to make decent money on a voluntary-payment basis on the internet, it's important that the process of paying for things online becomes at least as trivial and hassle-free as throwing a 20ct coin into the hat of a street musician. Right now, even the most usability-focused "e-money" solutions seem to be bureaucratic beyond a reasonable treshold (How many of those of us who readily reward a sappy tune in a public place with a coin fling would consider writing and signing 20-cent cheques instead?).

In all the upheaval, I wonder how the RIAA will react to the threat of influence loss...

Online banking is somewhat tedious, but it still tends to be quicker than having to get up and go to your music store and buying a CD

NIN isn't exactly my favorite band, but I download it and give the songs a spin for great justice. Especially since this is a step in the right direction.
