Here is a hack I released a few years go, it is by far the most advanced Nuts and Milk ASM hack ever created.

For the first time I am releasing the notes I took when making this hack. Although they may not make much since at first, once you play around with these values you should start to understand.

This is still the same DEMO I released a long time ago. Perhaps if a level editor was made, I would complete this hack.

This game is harder than it looks. Or it's just me who have a hard time mastering it's controls.

Well, and for a level editor. The game's data structure seems rather simple to understand, so it's something that would be doable in a relative short timeframe.

Yeah since it's a small game it'll be easy to make an editor for this game (I wish I knew a program language). I already submitted the data at RHDN and put a link to come here. Sometime this week, I plan to make a You Tube video of my N&M hack. And give the scoop about the data that's found.

That way hopefully someone out there'll be interested into making an editor. ^^;

The level editor should be really easy, although there are a couple features that I think should be included. They also might complicate it a bit.

1. Allow for larger or smaller levels.

(the levels should always start in the memory where the preceding level left off, this allows for a many simple levels or a few amount of complicated levels)

2. The ability to set the number of levels in the game - hex value 0300

(were you able to cram more levels in the game, or don't have as many? here is where you have to enter the number of levels before it reverts back to level 1)

3. The ability to select which levels are bonus levels. - Starting at 04a2

00 = standard level
01 = bonus level, slow, 1 fireball
02 = bonus level, medium, 2 fireballs
03 = bonus level, fast, 3 fireballs
04 = bonus level, insane, 4 fireballs

(this way you can make it every 5 levels, 10 levels, or just have the last level be the bonus.)

Those are all I can think of the would be important, other things are not so important like changing the time limits and player lives.

Thanks for working on the editor, looks great so far.

1. Simple, I was kind off thrown off since there was no pointer table in your or Trax's doc but the system it uses only serves to make it even simpler when I disassembled it.

2. There can be 51 or less as it stands, since the 04A2 table obviously has no extra room.

3. It's in, this is one of the things I was going to find in a debugger so you saved me the time of finding it myself.

As far as free space goes, there's practically nothing (which is fair to say for a 16kb PRG game).

When I give it out, it will have the above options and probably a palette editor. The palettes themselves consist of a base palette stored in sequence starting from 40h, then it takes the level # mod 4 and uses that to choose one of 4 palettes to decide what the bricks and pipe palettes are.

As not much more than a small remark, I think a sunk in client area border would look better around the rendered level than a "control group frame".

It's good to hear people are still enjoying it. I just played through the DEMO again myself and realized I forgot to make the time count down during the bonus stage. Oh well, at least it gives people a chance to figure it out.

Also, the difficulty of the physics rivals only the real Donkey Kong. They restrict you a lot. However by playing around with them, you are able to learn tricks that before seemed impossible.

I never found the Donkey Kong physics a limit. It's more like how the level design of yours push it tothe limit. xD
