Here's something I swear I remember doing as a kid, and having mentioned it to my friend he insists he did it too... but neither of us is able to do it anymore, nor can I find any info. on Google...

In Mario 3, after you beat one of the Koopa Kids and grab the wand, I seem to remember being able to press left and right on the D-pad to make Mario/Luigi change directions as he was falling down back towards the castle. I don't know if there was another button combination or if you had to be doing something when you grabbed the wand or what--whatever I did then, I either forgot or made up and tricked myself into believing really happened.

Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone, or am I just nuts?

Any help would be appreciated--this is serious business!

I think you have to already be holding down the 'run' button when you beat the koopaling and grab the wand in order to be able to do it and keep it held down while falling from the sky. That is all I remember, sorry.

Hey, any response is better than none! I'll have to give your suggestion a shot...

That didn't work, just tried it. It's possible that it involves running however..

I think you need your 'p' meter maxed while mid-jump when the boss died with raccoon tail maybe. That may be why the run button needs to be held down.
-edit-
Try using a p-wing.
