I know how it can be done, too. :O
Have a seperate variable in the user system representing the current HP and another representing the current MP. Have a function that allows you to select which user to attack, and which type of attack to use. Then, subtract the attacker's ATK from the attacked DEF (or MDF, if magic is used). When someone lowers the other person's HP to 0, then they get a random amount of EXP points or something.
