Ive finished designing the feature that would allow users to lock their roms to prevent others from editing it.
There are 2 options for locking, 1) Locked but viewable. The rom remains viewable and editable, it just cannot be saved. 2) Locked. The rom is locked and cannot be viewed. Author stamp - The rom would be tagged with the Authors name and a timestamp indicating when it was published. This would require a password to edit. It has been brought to my attention that some people may not even want this feature. In the past such a feature was to prevent theft of work, but these days that doesnt seem to be a problem, so maybe just the Author stamp would be a better idea. Keep in mind that this model for locking the rom wouldnt be broken with just a simple hex edit. I doubt I would be able to break into a locked rom even knowing how it works. |

Make it an option, so that those people who don't want others to open the ROM can, those who just don't want the ROM altered can have it their way, and those who only want to stamp the ROM with their own name can do that as well. |

I am a supporter of Open Source technology, so no.
Even if you add a locking feature, someone is bound to figure out how to unlock the ROM (See RLM). However, if you are going to add the feature despite my opinion, you should both, make the locking system actually good (i.e. not a one byte check), and have the editor lock hacks only with significant changes. ____________________ |

I bevieve I have devised a way to both have the security features, and open source the editor.
Also, the system ive worked out is actually pretty good. It involves private and public keys, SHA-1 cyphers, and hash checks. Id be very impressed if anyone found a way to break the system without modifying the editor. As far as I can see, the only way to break it would be to alter the editor to not check, and therein comes the problem of being able to still open source it. I think ive solved that though. Ive already written all the code to handle encryption, but finishing it might not be worth the effort if people dont even want the feature. |

No, only because I'm against the concept of handling ROM hacks as they were some kind of Intellectual property... in a DRM way too. :/ ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I prefer both features.
Some people can use lazy shell as a guide! For stuff such as open source though, there should be a trademark logo in the startup screen. |

I think it should have an author stamp and a rom lock. If a feature can be implemented, and you know at least a few people will use it, then do it. |

Implement it, idiot!
If anyone says don't, it's because they want to steal a hack. |

Posted by ArBeWhatHey hey, don't flame now. And well, obviously most people are in favor of at least having a "Author stamp" into the game. So go ahead and implement that first I guess. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Your right, I might work on that tonight.
Im tempted to implement it just to see that myself. Im not saying that it will never be broken, but I dont think itll be done anytime soon, and Im almost certain it will require the editor to be modified to just ignore the check. |

I'm not in favor of locking a rom with a password or encryption of some sort, etc. Some roms you may be able to do this if free space or padding at the end of a bank is available.
Usually I would not want to spend freespace for such a thing. Also, if there is no free space available, this action could comprimise the ROM and I would not like that. Also I agree with other reasons for not locking a ROM. The ROM could be locked from being used in a certain editor but wouldn't prevent you from hacking the game in a hex editor or other applications, generally speaking. Unless the data has been rearranged to prevent other editors from editing the game. |

I think that you should put both in. If people don't want other people to steal their stuff, then there should be a way to protect it. Also, the author stamp is a way of making sure that people know who the author of the hack is. ____________________ "There are 3 types of people in this world: Those who can count and those who can't." |

Yeah, im almost done with the whole system.
Im not sure if Im going to make the Rom Locking features public. Ive never been a fan of DRM, but since it is so easy to copy material using Lazy Shell (ie. Export from one rom and import into another) it seemed like a good idea. |
