For the past six months, I've had my laptop and desktop connected with a CAT5 crossover cable. I set the desktop's IP for that connection to 192.168.0.1, and my laptop's IP to 192.168.0.2. I could access my desktop's hard drive from my laptop by typing \\DESKTOP into an Explorer address bar. I also used Synergy to share my mouse and keyboard through this connection.

Today, it suddenly stopped working. It still partially works, since I can access my desktop's HTTP server by typing 192.168.0.1 into Firefox. However, I can no longer access the hard drive by typing \\DESKTOP, nor can I get Synergy to connect (which is what I miss most).

Any ideas of what I could try?

The desktop runs XP and the laptop runs Vista.

Problem solved.

Following the advice of a post I found with Google, I uninstalled the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol and reinstalled it again.

And it worked.
