And like I said, MON spelled it wrong, why didn't you quote Boo instead?
See, that's the problem. He spelled it right, BooUrns was wrong. Look it up.

Or maybe you should look up depreciated because it is a word.

You all lose.

The correct word is "obsolete".

Valid XHTML sucks...

On another note, the problem he had with the uploader was that he, evidently, tried to upload into the staff section (which reads "staff" for a reason...).

No, obsolete means you should never use it as it is now completely unsupported. Deprecated means you can use it if you want, but it's discouraged b/c they've got something they would prefer you to use, per their new direction in design. Program much?

Something can also be obsolete but left in for compatibility issues (hello windows 3.1 which only supports really old internet browser versions)

There was a Win16 port of IE 5.5. That's probably latest browser wise you can get.

With Win NT 3.51 you can basically run most modern browsers, with some determination and hacking of source code.

Valid XHTML sucks...

Having saner HTML code on the net would make the life of alternative browser vendors much easier, resulting in better browsers, and also reducing the influence of Internet Explorer. Therefore, I have troubles seeing why valid HTML or XHTML suck so much.

That is what deprecation is. You could hypothetically program in 16-bit code if you wanted to, and it would be supported up to Windows XP. But in Vista, I believe that almost all 16-bit code is now obsolete. Probably all of it unless you whip up an emulator (which is what Win32 does for the DOS era applications it has the ability to support. It's a virtual machine.)

Obsolete and deprecated are not the same thing. Take a look at .NET (2002) when it came out. Microsoft wanted people to use the .NET api in favor of the more arcane Win32 SDK. That doesn't stop me from programming in Win32 in 2008 (which I do a lot of). Designating something as deprecated means it has fallen out of favor with the people that design the language, not necessarily the people that use it.

To continue the API analogy: The INI functions (GetPrivateProfileString et al) are deprecated in favor of Registry functions. These new functions obsolete the INI ones, but you can still use them.

I prefer the INI functions, myself. There's like, half the amount for those and you'll only ever need about four: Get/Write PrivateProfile Int/String.

I'd define it as follows...

Obsolete means it shouldn't be used anymore because there's something doing the same things better.
Deprecated means it shouldn't be used anymore because some guys with authority came up with something new they want you to use instead.

This makes sense.

Microsoft probably wants to be able to compile their own programs still... assuming they use the same compiler that's up for download
