So I just kicked my (not exactly stable either way) Debian system's remaining stability to the curb and decided to get the fresh KDE 4 packages that were put into the experimental branch.

screenshot

On first sight, the increased eyecandy of the whole thing makes a very positive impression; things like the integrated with the desktop widget system positively have good potential. It feels like they are on the right way.

However, I can't recommend anyone to follow my steps on a machine that is planned to be used productively. The number of bugs in the current stage is hardly bearable. Trying to turn on desktop effects when the graphics card driver (thanks, ATI...) does not support shaders properly leads to plasma crashing and the taskbar being gone on the next restart; the only way to bring it back I found so far was rm -rfing ~/.kde4/*, thus deleting all your other interface settings as well. Konqueror sometimes fails to display web pages for no particular reasons; Iceweasel (the debranded port of Firefox) works better in that aspect. Several parts of the UI, widgets in particular, seem to not work yet. Installation also will drag tons of unstable-branch packages into your system, negatively affecting overall stability (though I don't know if it's as bad in other distributions).

Discuss.

Oh yeah, also, in Konqueror, textareas break in a graphic manner as soon as they get focus.

KDE4 is supposed to be faster as well. I really hadn't tried KDE much in the last few years, but I might exprimentate with it a bit on my Ubuntu laptop. I probably would be more careful than you, and probably avoid installing it if it's not available for my package system.

Then from the sounds of it, I probably better try KDE4 in a virtual machine first where I can risk it.

Ailure: KDE 4 can be installed on Ubuntu with KDE 3 on it simultaneously...

Also you can't reconfigure the panel, wtf. Also I noticed their Solitaire renderer got a facelift, heh.

speaking of which, what's with the giant clock on a desktop fad again? Are the 90s being repeated?

chungy: I just put some widgets that didn't look like total crap on the desktop for the screenshot...

Kawa: Yes, yes it is. I wouldn't go anywhere without my foobar2k and mIRC >:3
