A lot of programming languages have a data type called char or Char, usually for single characters, strings, or both. How do you pronounce this word?

I say it "char" like the English word "char", with a ch sound as in chicken, but I've also heard "care" and "car" as pronunciations. I understand "care" as it is the pronunciation of the first syllable of character, but where are people getting "car"? It sounds like a weird hybrid compromise pronunciation to me...

I pronounce it like the "char" in "charcoal", which is probably what you meant. xD

I've always pronounced it like 'car.' After all, it is short for 'character,' right?

I say it as the first syllable of the word "character". "Char" as in the word "char" makes absolutely no sense to me.

I usually say "character" anyway in real life, but in my head I use the above pronunciation.

I pronounce it like it's written, so like "charr"

Funny thing about the "car" one is that "char" in French can be a slang word for "car" (but it also means "tank")

I'd say "char" because that is how it's spelled. If it's supposed to be "car" why not call it "Car?"

I pronounce it sort of like chair.

Its short for character, so I just sort of nab the pronunciation from that word and midgetize it.

"Char" like charcoal.

Or charbroil

Or charred...

I know its short for character, but it doesnt feel like it should be "car" or "Care" =/

I used to say char like "charcoal", but now I say "car" as in automobile. My CS teacher from highschool pronounced it "car", so that's why. To be honest, I almost never need to say it aloud (kinda like with scsi and gui), so I just only need to read it.

"char"coal for me. I've had people actually get upset and start ranting at me for pronouncing it that way. I don't really think it makes any difference, as long as it's understood what you're referring to, and it's not like 'char' or 'car' or 'care' refer to any other term that you might confuse it with.

I always used to pronounce it "char" like with burning things.
I've been moving towards pronouncing it "care" because that's the most proper pronunciation.
Of course, since I'm still switching, I sometimes pronounce it "chair" because the ch is just so hard to get rid of.
