So I was making a collage for this huge English project I keep talking about. It was made in Photoshop, 8-bit RGB, 3300x2550 pixels (8.5 x11"), and since it also had 37 layers, the filesize was a bit... large. (56.8MB to be exact.) The fact I was running Azureus and Firefox at the same time didn't help much. The thing is, when I went to save it as a .jpg level 5, Photoshop froze at the "Generating Fullscreen Composite" stage. The bar did reach the end and the window disappeared, but nothing happened. Photoshop wouldn't even respond to new commands.

I started to panic. I checked My Documents to see if the file had saved after all. It wasn't there at all. I stared horrified at my monitor, dumbfounded. To say I was livid was an understatement. Desperate, I tried the Task Manager. Photoshop was eating 168MB of my 256MB RAM. Firefox was at around 65MB, and Azureus at 12MB. I tried killing some processes to free up some memory, but to no avail. Photoshop still stood completely frozen. Resignated to my inevitably having to do everything all over again, I clicked "End Task" on the Photoshop process. Three hours of work and Google image search down the toilet. I was fucking pissed.

I restarted Photoshop, this time making sure to save as much memory as possible by making it grayscale and flattening it every time I pasted something. I had also set process priority to Realtime. A fatal mistake. Nothing would stop me from finishing now, I thought.

How very wrong I was.

After I was about half-done, I decided to flatten everything I had up until now. Guess what? When I right-clicked on the layer, Photoshop froze again! This time, my computer was as good as crashed, since having set Photoshop to realtime priority, I could not invoke the powers of the almighty Task Manager. Enraged, I cut the power on my PC and restarted. "NOW IS WHEN I FINISH THIS!!", I yelled. The computer restarted fine, but suddenly, BSOD! It was one of those I get whenever zonealarm is a bitch and doesn't load at startup. I restarted once more. Another one. My patience was wearing thin by now. After the third restart, BOOM. Yet another BSOD reared its ugly blue head. Three BSOD's in a row. I fucking wanted to strangle someone.

So there I was, at 11:30 PM, redoing everything in grayscale 8-bit, flattening the image every once in a while, and saving every two seconds. And when I wanted to post this thread last night, I had a really long post just like this one written down. When I clicked Submit, my connection timed out. It was a DNS down, right in the nick of time.

The moral of the story? Save. Save often. And buy something better than 256MB RAM.

That being said, what are some of your experiences in getting completely owned?

If image size didn't matter, I would've just zoomed out and cut-psated into Paint.

I've gotten huge amounts of viruses at a time before...for a while I had to reformat my hard drive every morning! A firewall fixed those problems though.

It did.

My nazi English teacher demands it be 8.5 x 11 inches. She did allow us to leave it black and white, though.

It was a lot of pixels to fill.

Now that I think about it, you're right. I could have just halved the canvas, work with that, and resize everything when I was done.

Why didn't I think of that sooner?!

Yeah, 256 sucks, my laptop has 256 too, and my other PC only has 64 O_o.

I want to buy the offer of 1,299 dollars for a Vista with 1TB of HD and 2GB of RAM .

My experience is that Paint tends to ruin the colours of any image not stored as .bmp.

I once spent an hour and a half typing something for English. It was due the next day, and I hadn't started (I'm a bit of a procrastinator) and I decided to start. I spent an hour and a half typing, searching for content, pictures, etc. I finally got it all together for the project, and it's late, so I decide it's finished and go off to bed. I wake up the next morning to send it to my uncle so he can print it (no printer), and realize that I forgot to save it. The teacher didn't believe me, so all that work, for nothing. Without even a chance to redo it

Well, even 512 MB is not enough for my needs. I have 2 GB right now, but I can never be sure when that feels little. I tend to like running programs with heavy memory usage...

I've got 192 and I can't do any higher. People aren't necessarily made of money either. In my case, I'd have to get a whole new mobo plus RAM and...honestly...I'd rather get the cash to buy a whole new comp if I'm up to that level.

So it takes several minutes for a text render to work in Photoshop CS. Whoopie.

My computer likes to crash randomly nowadays (I blame my little sister having to use it for a week). So, I save my essays every 5 or 10 minutes. One time I plowed through 2500 words of essay, edited, cited, bibliography, formatted the piece to the university standard, saved. Computer crashed. Lost it all.

I havent been owned by my computer crashing, oh no.

Ive been owned by the BANE OF ALL EVIL TO COMPUTERS...

Power outages

Basically, I was typing up a personal narritive for english and about halfway through, BAM, the power goes dead.

Then it gets back up, and when I start to work BAM... it's out again.

Needless to say, I was up until 12:00 finishing that thing when the power finally came back on.

It's an English class, not an art class. Your teacher is a dumb bitch.

My sister pulled out her power cord one day because she just guessed at a random plug to pull out when she needed to charge her phone. It resulted in CMOS corruption and now she cannot fast boot. So... when she boots... it has to scan ALL her memory. 8 MB... 16 MB... 24 MB... 32 MB... ... 512 MB...

Fun!

Until 31/3/07 three term papers need to be done.
What concerns important work like this, I'm kinda ... paranoid. So I save quite often (not every two hours or something similar) and I often send copies of it to myself, move another copy to my MP3-player, regardless of the state (if certain parts are not done yet etc.).

The good thing is: If my computer crashes and/or all material/sources/papers are lost, I have the backup at least. So in the worst case scenario there is still the possibility to go to university, hook up my player on a computer and finish the word in a couple or hours. Games and music are on CD or will be re-downloaded, though the "important" things need to be backed up as well.

Though never a drive failed for me. I still have an old 6,4 GB hard drive from IBM lying around, which still works, if put into a machine.
