Not completely sure how midi control works.
Sometime in the future, I'm gonna try to get myself a Roland GR-20 guitar synth.

Roland GR-20 guitar synth pedal package (fuckin 500 dollars dude) (converts guitar string notes into midi note shit)

It says it can output midi stuff, but I don't get it. My soundcard only has Output for speakers, mic, and line in. There's a front soundjack panel that also accesses for headphones and mic, but that is caved in.

Midi In? I don't have that. My comp has a builton soundcard so I don't know.

The real reason I want a guitar synth is to make osc sounds like squarewaves and synthetic soundwaves. The roland guitar synth seems to have patches like MIDI, and it has synth sounds, but I don't know if it has custom synth sounds.

You need a new sound card that has native support for MIDI.

Which can probably cost a lot.

My old desktop PC I had before used a pretty damn old sound card. The joystick port doubled as a MIDI port, so that was pretty cool. I connected some kind of fisherpricey Keytar to it once, even though I can't play shit.

Sorry chungy.

It's probably less common on modern computers, but I can't imagine a separate sound card with a MIDI port being too expensive.

Heh, I bet it was used more for gamepads than MIDI instruments too...

Depends on your interests, I guess. And preferences in input devices. I myself highly prefer using the keyboard.

Interestingly, a friend of mine has recently brought in a sweet ass-synth. It has MIDI caps, but we both have laptops. *shoots self*

Edit: Remind me to call Mom to check her fairly new system for a game port.

Indeed, a (old) sound card with a game port (click) (15-pin DA) should be sufficient for the task if you have the right cable.

I have plenty of old sound cards with such connectors, but they are all ISA cards, unfortunately. And no modern computer has ISA slots anymore.

What would Midi control do? It would do more than just control the midi sounds right? It can control anything that takes midi notes right?

The GR-20 seems to be a patch synth, so it seems more like a bunch of midi presets, when what I'm looking for personally is osc waveforms like sine, square, saw, triangle, to make custom synth sounds out of my guitar.

Per definition, MIDI doesn't sound like anything. Windows XP has a built in software wave table, and some sound cards have their own. These wave tables are the reason that a MIDI file can just be played as music. MIDI itself transports nothing but note data and such. This is also why MIDI files are so small. They contain no sound.

IIRC, the term "MIDI controller" is used to describe a device that can interface with other MIDI devices. So if you have a MIDI controller, you might connect it to a computer MIDI interface so they can talk with eachother. You can then use programs like Cubase on the computer to record the MIDI input.

Noone ever thought of using computers as MIDI "instruments" when MIDI was first made.

I know about midi notes but I was thinking if the midi input would only do stuff to the midi drive or if it would make it compatable as data instead.

Synth keyboards with MIDI ports are MIDI controllers. They can send and recieve MIDI-standard data. This would be mostly program changes, note on/off... that kind of stuff.

Way I'd imagine it, if you let your PC play .MID files through the synth, it'd only send the actual commands without the delta time stamps. Same with recording from the synth. And then there's synths with their own recording memory, which would include the delta timing.

i'm not going to advertise a product here, so just google
midi to usb

My sister is the one into composition, but I do recommend M-audio products, as we have bought a couple and they run well with Linux.

As for those of us stuck on laptops. If you listen to midi, I use timidity++ and a nice soundfont. Makes midis sound pretty darn good (although I don't listen to midis as much as I used to...)

Not to drag things too off topic here, but I once purchased an ancient Modem/Sound card for a dollar. I haven't seen it in quite a while, but it may have had a midi port...
