Last view: 5643 days 		Just to double-check, and external hard drive is just a normal hard drive in a fancy case, right?

So if one of my externals tanks, I can just buy a regular hard drive and swap out the guts?

Or am I completely off-base?

It depends... I have both seen ones with an internal ATA controller and interface which you essentially plugged a normal (though laptop-sized, most of the time) hard drive into and ones that were hardwired or even used proprietary disks to begin with. I'm not sure which ones are more commonplace though since it's not really something I ever considered getting...

Well, I seen a USB adaptor somewhere to turn a regular HD into a external one. From what I know, external harddrives isn't just "internal HD in a pretty case" but who knows, it might differ between models...
