since I've posted this thread the amount of members in the group has only decreased, lol

Facebook... apart from what you hear about social websites in general, I have heard many bad things about them in particular on the internet; thus, I'm not really feeling the urge to sign up either.

So how many people exactly are in that anyway?

Getting facebook would be suicide for me.

Everything my classmates have been saying about it is... rather negative. Then I get the impression it's a site for "party animals" and doesn't give much for "computer nerds".

Err I really don't see how this is the case in any way at all. What have you been hearing?

That it's filled with "fjortisar", people who are of young age but have this self-image of being really cool. Applies especially to the female gender.

...of course I might be thinking on MySpace now.

ailure, facebook is for everyone. you only associate with people you befriend and groups you join. all kinds of people sign up, and to be intimidated because the cooler kids might use the same website as you is pretty sad.

not to imply that facebook is something anyone needs, your criticism was just pretty terrible.

Um, facebook isn't for everyone. It does tend to attract the sort that expose themselves, as it's the type of thing where most people who sign up use their real names, and have hundreds of self-portraits.

So why should that discourage anyone else who isn't that type of person? They can be completely separate.

One of my classmates was one of those people, and it didn't work too well as I recall. Should really ask him why again one of those days.

I guess social networks is just not my thing. I could give it a try and look for technical interests groups, things like programming.

I mean... it's not even a thing. You don't have to make a big deal out of "joining a social network." You don't have to plan out the changes in your exciting new life. You just sign up and see if you like the convenience of sending messages to people you know, or to people your friends know, or whatever.

The criticism I heard about it mostly focused on its reportedly seclusive in a paranoid way nature... people said it pretty much made contact with somebody you aren't already acquainted with in some way impossible.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can search any name on there and send them a message, but you can't look at everybody's profile.

i don't really care about facebook one way or the other i'm just completely baffled by the weird ideas you guys have about it

Well, I can't claim actually having looked at it myself (the only social network side I joined to date, a German one for school students, struck me with its stupidity...), so I only can reproduce what I heard... but well, if you can send somebody a message but not view their profile, wouldn't even just googling for mail addresses be a less aimless way of gaining new contacts?

Can you find your mail address by googling? You can't find mine, I hope. Look, facebook was made for college students, where pretty much anyone you meet is going to have a facebook account, so if you meet someone you can look up their name later and add them as a friend or whatever. I don't know what you're expecting. If you're looking for a magical device that gives you friends then I guess facebook isn't it.
