Is there a video player capable of displaying two movies at once and start/stop them simultaneously (and maybe also separately too)?

I'm relatively positive you could do this if you let at least one of the videos run without hardware acceleration; it's the hardware video overlay that constitutes a singleton on the system. Then, I can't claim being entirely sure you can't have two videos use the overlay at once; it's more of a qualified hypothesis.
