Download

Remember, it hadn't been under much user-testing so there's a quite few bugs (Some rather amusing ones)... but it's mostly playable from what I seen. The classical way of playing is now gone, and is replaced with the idea of a Z axis. Now you can dig downwards, which can make intresting gameplay on a flat map. I just built a small house (probably will try turning it into a tower, hehe) on a such map, and then digged downwards in it. Works very well.

Sounds like fun.

I'll try it Saturday cause that's when I'll be free from school D:

Yeah. I downloaded this yesterday.

Pluses:
- This is really freaking awesome.
Minuses:
- I have NO IDEA what's going on.

I'm thinking I'm not gonna be able to play until there's a good tutorial on how to irrigate in this new system.

I just found out, you no longer need to irrigate (just create a farm plot). You can also create farms outdoors now, with wild berries and stuff.

Also the Z level system is awesome. I even created a small house made out of wood, and digged downwards in it (creating a huge "basement" ).

The "just create a farm plot" advice isn't quite right. You can put a farm on any type of soil. A lot of regions have a few layers of soil above all the rock, and you can farm in those regions. But if you've just got rock, you still have to figure out a way to get it muddy so you can farm.

True, but at least farming is less annoying (besides I did seemingly choose a rather damp place... had to dig down a few levels to even find rock).

I even made my own water silo , which got salmons.Just want to point out that's just a test construction... as I might wind up building a bigger silo later one (imaging build a huge tower of silo, and then flood the world with it ). Canals and such works a little bit differently too, but I already figured it out after some random testing.

And heh, you're right. I had a farm on sand, but i'm putting most of the infrastructure down where there is rock, which is three levels down. I have some infrastructure overground, but it's rather tedious (but rewarding) to build a house. Apparently, tiles that have a floor tile over it is counted as indoors, it doesn't even to be in a closed space.

He just released a new version, supposed to fix some of the worst slowdowns issues. Almost makes me regret my own decision of abondening my fortress yesterday, but eh... I got rather bored and annoyed at the choice of terrain, so I went for a glacier. x Maybe I wind up carving a huge fortress in the ice or something haha. Now if I could get the ice to melt.

You can even create walls with ice (called water in the game xD).

So I tried creating a world.

It took forever to get the landscape it wanted. Stupid-ass rejections, what's with them anyways >8(

Right now the world gen makes sure that there is a relatively even spread of terrain features (mountains, ocean, forest, etc.) so that you have enough variety. Now that you can start fortresses anywhere, this isn't so important. I heard that Toady is considering making it an option you can turn off.

If you really can't stand the wait, you can probably find some place with a pregenerated world that you can download. If not, well... maybe I'll put one up.

In other news, considering I struggled with the old version, I think I'm now at the level of "completely hopeless". It's more like a brick wall than a learning curve. Also, the "water boulders" and so on is another recognized bug, because it is supposed to melt at that point.

You can also generate world from a spefic seed instead of downloading it. It takes a little bit to generate, but usually the seeds provided at various forums or at the wiki.

The water boulders is a bug? I thought it was supposed to be a feature. I even started building walls with them, who can melt. I just had a fortress on a glacier, and I noticed that if you did bring them down below the bedrock... there would be enough warmth to make them melt down there.

I dunno, the games have gotten easier in some aspects. You only need to irrigate if you want to farm on stone. For newbies, I would recommend to focus on building a kitchen, still, fishery and a small farming. And probably a carpentry for producing a few beds, since dwarfs don't like sleeping on the floor. And a few doors built by the carpentry (or mason) to block rooms from wildlife doesn't hurt too.

I'm thinking about if we could do a small succession game here or something too. Dunno what kind of setup we should go for though.

I've been playing it since it came out Monday.

So far I've managed to make 3 forts. The first was fiddling wiht mechanics. The second was great until I got sieged and all my dwarves started tantruming, so I abandoned... and reclaim mode crashes when you get to your forts.

My current fort is doing well. It's mostly based around a self-maintaining power generator.

Some of the things I've done are

-Perpetual Motion power generators
-Dwarf-made fountains/waterfalls

And water boulders ara a bug. Try to make a wall out of them; it treats it as rock when it shouldn't. Also aquifiers suck, they're a *real* pain to get past. Also it's really funny to build a pumping tower and go into it in adventurer mode and break down the door on the top floor.

Instant flood

Hehe, Aquaifers. As soon I actually heard about them, I couldn't resist and actually went for a map with Aquaifers on purpose. Now I'm dependant on wood, until the stupid caraven brings me the blocks I need. xD

I made a simlple loop out of that water silo.

It seems like the game goes really slow when a dwarf tantrums, or dies. I gave up my first good fortress after this, as I figured out the fortress was doomed anyway.

I should probably give adventure mode a proper try now, seeing how it's somewhat improved and more intresting with the Z-levels.

I made a few test games too, such as one where I started in a human town. Really fun to make human houses cave-in. Lots of free wood. xD Bit cheap though, considering the humans aren't upset at the dwarfs...

yeah. BTW, if you guys have FPS problems, reduce G_FPS byt about 10-15 in init.txt (data/init/init.txt). It took my FPS from ~60 to ~97.

the really slow game is because of pathfinding issues and such. One fort I had ran into it so badly it would lock up for 30 seconds at a time, frequently!

Of course everyone else at the forums decided Toady One had to takea one-week break, so no bugfixes or anything until then. Also in the human houses, I just moved in without deconstructing them XD

...You know that you can now take tower-cap logs and barrels fm the embark menu, right? heh.

build workshops ([w])

the ones you want are [m]asonry and [c]arpentry. Note that you'll need raw stones or logs available.

Needs building material non-
economic item

I'm guessing that just having the resources nearby won't work.
You need to collect them...right?

Ah, I ran into that problem, too. By default, the game reserved all the stone and ores that are used for special purposes (such as metalworking). But since there isn't much choice of stone when you first start, that's not what you what. If you hit [z] and go into the stone menu you can set those restrictions individually.

Oh, right. I'd forgotten about that since I have plenty of non-economic stone lying around... though I did once start in an area with nothing but limestone, iron ore, and native platinum ore underground

(Siegers killed the fort, and reclaim mode won't work right now)

well, have you mined any out?

If so, that's probably a bug. Instead, cut down some tree and use wood if you can.
