Before now I only had one week vacation a year, so I'd spend some of it with my family for Christmas, and just stay at home and relax for the rest. This year I have an extra week to take before October, so I'm thinking of taking a trip.

Any ideas where to go? So far the farthest I've been is Connecticut (I live in Michigan). That was about a year ago, and it was for work training. Before that I hadn't even been on a plane. We didn't have money for that kind of stuff growing up, but now I have some money, so I want to go see some stuff.

Right now I'm leaning towards Ireland. But I'm looking for suggestions. No where to far, or too expensive, I'm looking to spend under $2000 for 5 days for 2 people. Europe is probably as far as I can go.

Ideas?

2000 dollars for 5 days and 2 people?

You couldn't afford to go to Europe. I just ran through a check of Detroit to Dublin. http://www.expedia.ca/pub/agent.dll?qscr=fexp&flag=q&city1=Detroit&citd1=Dublin&date1=11/6/2007&time1=362&date2=16/6/2007&time2=362&cAdu=2&cSen=0&cChi=0&cInf=&infs=2&tktt=&ecrc=&eccn=&qryt=8&bund=1&load=1&rfrr=&mcicid=&lnkcid=62

Have you considered perhaps going north to Canada and taking a train? Going to the west coast of the states? Heck, a cruise is more in your budget.

personally, i don't think you should travel too far. have you ever been to cedar point in ohio? considering your location, i wouldn't be surprised if you have, but that's a place i'd not mind going more than once. i had the opportunity to go there with my brothers about 3 years ago, but i passed it up because i didn't want to sit in the car for so long. that aside, i'd recommend going there, just for fun. it wouldn't really last 5 days, though.. maybe 1 or 2 days if you see everything, but i'm certain it'd be an enjoyable experience.

I´d advice him to ride Top Thrill Dragster. I dunno what amusement park that one is in but it´s the fastest coaster in the world. 111mph.

I found as cheap as $1300 through Priceline. It much cheaper when you get a plane/hotel/car package.

I've been to Cedar Point. It was fun, but the lines were a bit ridiculous.

i'm jealous! i wonder how far away from it i live now. being about an hour long drive away from chicago, i'm sure it wouldn't take more than 6 hours to get to cedar point.
...which is still too long. no way in hell i'd be willing to drive 6 hours, i'm still just getting to drive!

I forgot to respond to the other stuff in my last post:

Canada: The guy I work with (there's only one other person on second shift), suggested Canada or Alaska. Its an option, but I would have to wait until the warmest part of the summer. I don't like cold.

West Coast: Hadn't thought of that. Although I'm seriously considering Vegas. I hear its very inexpensive.

New York City: Almost went there when I was in Connecticut. Went to Boston instead. That was a mistake. New York would be nice to visit, but I'm not sure I could get a week's worth of enjoyment out of it.

Actually, I was just talking about this very topic with my room mates. Have you considered a Balkan country to travel in? They're cheap, have amazing beaches and are gorgeous. Croatia is apparently quite nice, spending time on the Dalmatian coast would always be fun. You could be like Emperor Theodosius!

I'm looking into Croatia. Priceline doesn't have any packages Zagreb, and round trip tickets are almost a $1000 each.

What cities in Balkans would likely have an international airport?

Sarajevo, Zagreb, Tirana, Sophia, Skopije, Belgrade, Podgorica, Ljubljana, . They should all have servicable airports.

My suggestion would be to buy a budget ticket to England and then at Heathrow you buy a ticket to anywhere you want to go. Prague is quite nice. Really, the best bet is just to buy one of those flights out of Toronto/Montreal/NYC and then the flights to anywhere in Europe are <100 bucks.

Vegas might be cheaper, but you have to avoid the tables. That's where they make most of their money.

It is really fun there though, I went multiple times a year when I was younger. Lots of fun things to do aside from gambling, and tons of arcades. <3

I see. Would it be cheaper to leave out of Toronto, Montreal, or NYC? I had Chicago in mind, because its only a 2 and a half hour drive. Detroit is just as close, but flights from Chicago seem to be cheaper.

What about Rome? Has anyone been there?

Chicago sucks. Take it from one that lived local to it. :\

Mine would be anywhere away from work for a week...both jobs...just so I wouldn't have to worry about it all. :\

Heh... no such thing as "discount" carriers around here with all the added fees/taxes.

But yeah, flying out of London seems to be the way to go... I know people who've done that travelling to Europe.
