Arkos 4 Updated

Edit: I added a third voice here but haven't corrected some mistakes yet. You might recognize that 'crappy violin instrument' as belonging to something like zelda 3.

A bit of cleaning up and tweaking it to fit itself better will be done later (though I think I'll leave you guys alone with this stuff for a while).

Hm, interesting. I can't say I personally like it, but it is good and other people probably would, good job. One thing I could say is that it's a little stop-go, however. Also fixed your link to have "http://" in front of it so the link wouldn't break.

Needs more of a beginning (and potentially ending) and the dissonant section towards the end of its first 1/3 is a tad too long. Other than that, not half bad.

Well, being entirely honest, it's very lacking. It's very repetative, it lacks depth, and it's cheaply made. Now I know this is one of your first works, so I give you some props. However, you need to work on adding more depth, such as drums, bass, and other sounds. Once you've mastered this kind of stuff start working on variation. Make a loop and repeat it once. After that transit into something else, then make the transition to the original loop but change it up a bit. This will teach you how to not only make your song lasting, but it'll also teach you how to do proper transitions.

As for it being cheaply made, I can't really discredit you much for that. You are kinda new at this (or so it seems), so you don't really know what to do yet. From what I can hear in your song, all you used was FL Presets which were a little too loud and caused distortion. As you go along, you're going to want to start making your own sounds or using better samples. Another thing is that since it was distorted, you need to work on proper volume. As you make your songs with more depth, you'll have a lot more to deal with and it's harder to fix.

I know this is a lot, but I just want to get you to know what you're doing. Eventually you're going to need to learn how to balance out frequencies, which is known as mastering, automated control, or envelop, and various other technics. It'll come to you though. Just mess around and you'll be amazed at what you can create.

Yes, I am somewhat new to music composition. I don't know and haven't studied anything formal about it. I play the piano a bit but don't read music, and play by ear (which may or may not prevent me from starting a song in the wrong key). Somehow or another liking fruity loops and the piano seem to complement each other somehow. Another thing I noticed is that after trying to replicate Bach's songs and baroque style, I improved a little. I've got a strong admiration for the man, and his Little Fugue is one of my favorites. I'd love to be able to play a church organ. How cool is it to get all four limbs going?

I don't really know where my hobbyist approach to music will me take, I don't take it very seriously. I have good memory for music and know when I'm playing something wrong, but at present that's all I have going for me. Unless liking math somehow helps with that. Sequencing music is easy, actually playing a song is not.

But yes, this example is only using two voices and could easily use one bass voice and second one used percussively. I don't want to use actual drums in this sample unless it's something soft or subtle. I haven't bothered yet with the additional details, but I've played a few variations of what I might do or add in my head.

Another really bad thing I have trouble with is getting both hands going for a song.

Edit: I'm not using all default really. I'm relying on a soundfont of the snes final fantasies (or at least thats what the instruments sound like). I haven't overly concerned myself with quality, that can wait. The composition takes itself takes priority.

I just took a quick listen. Opens up really nice in those first four measures, giving something of a "sit down and I'll tell you a story" kind of feel, and then the melody just kind of meanders aimlessly. Could use an ending, but I'm assuming it was intended to be repeated. About halfway, the song changes using higher notes and, and there was a good buildup going at that point, and upon anticipating some kind of climax, it kind of fizzles.

Anyway, about developing piano skills, find a way practice proper fingering more than anything, and this is when formal musical training becomes important. One way of doing this is looking at those little 1-5 numbers placed over notes on sheet music. I suppose you could experiment with different fingering combination for certain melodic motifs until you find the best sounding one, but the problem with that is that there might be better ones than the one you think is the best. I too first played by ear, which was good because melodic and harmonic intervals became easy to recognise, but because I had little proper fingering for a long time, I played notes sloppily (e.g, certain notes would be pressed longer/shorter and harder/softer than they should be) and thus developed a poor sense of rhythm.

As for note reading, sequencing helped me with that more than anything. The more I composed and arranged music in notation programs, the easier the notes were to recognize, as did figuring at which notes belonged in which key. Good for you improving by immitating Bach, learning (or ripping off in someform or another) from the masters is one of the best steps toward improving methods of musical composition.
