So, my computer completely died on me and all my music is stuck on an internal HD. My mac is working just fine and all my music is on a regular NTFS partition. Will something like this [www.newegg.com] give me everything I need to transform my internal HD into and external HD?

I don't see why not, however I don't recall macs supporting NTFS drives, you may need another windows computer or data recovery software compatible with NTFS to actully read the drive.

Whoa, that's cheap. I would have expected sixty bucks, no less, from a harddrive external case.

And doesn't NTFS stand for something like Windows NT Filesystem?

Or was it Not The FAT System? I forget.

If I recall correctly my other external was formatted in NTFS and works fine on mac. If not then I'll just take it to someone elses computer and do some clever file transfering and stuff to reformat the drive while keeping the data. Just needed to make sure there wasn't something I was missing with the external case, I've never done this before. Thanks.

Mac OS X ships with read-only NTFS support, but if you use NTFS-3G, you can have complete read/write support too.

Grey Mario: It stands for the NT File System (or "New Technology File System" as some people claim, it depends on wheather you count New Technology as being the official expansion of NT or not, it's up to debate). It's based on HPFS (High Performance File System, from OS/2), though with more features.

Hopefully, the data on your NTFS drive was set to allow anyone to read it. If that isn't the case, then you might not be able to get your data.

But wouldn't 3rd party drivers allow you to read those files anyway? As long they're not encrypted I mean...

NTFS-3G currently ignores all the security bits on the filesystem (this is also a good reason to never depend on filesystem features for the safety of your data). The only possible problem is if files were encrypted natively...

Worse come to worse I'll hook it into one of my friend's windows computers and transfer the data back and forth then reformat with Partition Magic. I'm not too worried about getting the ddata back.
