Progress? I've just made minor changes to existing levels, really. New screenshots require me to finish new levels and make new graphics sets. When I have something significant to show, I will. |

About some of mikeyk's newest sprites (Such as the YI ShyGuy, Kaboomba, and even the Ice Blocks that can spawn any sprite depending on the first byte in the .bmp) will you be making even bigger creations with these and maybe add a sprite from STARSW.zip to spice things up? Perhaps you could add something like this: Example: At a certain point in the game, the friendly dino Don-Don needs you to navigate an industrial site where they're destroying the eco system of the island and Don-Don gives Mario a special warping command console that works by pressing select in a certain area of the level to progress further into the game. And if you're lucky, you'll find Don-Don's Grotto which acts the same as his wigwam in world 2 but would be for world 3. Posted by Treeki You need to utilize the Yellow Koopas to retrieve the key and a silver P-Switch to get to the keyhole. Yellow Koopas turn into flashing super shells after you stomp them. Since super shells chase Mario, you can lead them where you want them to go. A silver P-Switch can destroy munchers (which I probably shouldn't have assumed my audience would know) and you can drop through the grey cage blocks they're growing on once they're gone to get to the keyhole. I have a video of the solution here if you still need help.
I really haven't played around with STARSW very much. I think I played through the levels once back when mikeyk first released it with Sprite Tool, thought, "Huh. That's cool," then kind of forgot about it. So I guess I'll look into all the things it can do again. I'm definitely going to use the frozen enemy blocks. I probably won't use the YI Shy Guy because the animation on the feet doesn't really match the style I'm going for. Kaboomba, gameplay-wise, is a moving diagonal Bill shooter, and I can't really think of a use for it at the moment. If you're going to ride an enemy across a spike pit, which is how a lot of people use Kaboombas, I'd rather just use Mega Mole because Kaboomba's kind of a slow, repetitive ride. Shockingly, I hadn't thought that much about the story beyond what I started in the demo, but the island's ecosystem being in danger could be a nice direction to go. I hadn't really planned on doing any industrial areas, but I'll consider your example now. |

Posted by icegoomWhen I read this, I instantly thought of Kremkroc Industries, Inc. in Donkey Kong Country. Since you've already used DKC2 as inspiration, you could probably look at that world for ideas. ____________________ |

That would be rather cool. I don't think detailed factory graphics have been done in SMW yet. You could easier look at DKC as a reference for your graphics if you choose to do so. ____________________ |

Posted by MattrizzlePosted by icegoomWhen I read this, I instantly thought of Kremkroc Industries, Inc. in Donkey Kong Country. Since you've already used DKC2 as inspiration, you could probably look at that world for ideas. Make that 2 An industrial zone sounds like a cool idea for a final world or something. According to the old thread, Icy wanted to make a cave/glacier world and a volcanic world in addition to the themes we've got now. That leaves 1 of the 5 main worlds with an open theme--and a DKC-inspired industrial wasteland sounds freakin' awesome. A Poison Pond-inspired toxic lake could have a really short time limit and the only way to survive would be to go through pipes to safe rooms, resetting the timer. Modified Layer 3-mist would be great to simulate murky water like in the DKC version. And since you're such a wizard at ExGFX, it should be just a small bump in the road to make an industrial tileset. Make it really ominous and evil-looking--atmosphere is the order of the day Nice contrast to the tropical, "countryside", prehistoric atmosphere of the rest of the game. The plot so far seems like a nice twist--Jurassic Park in reverse, anyone?? I'm dying to see more. Kaboomba would be great for factory levels, and if you're willing to get really, really, REALLY overboard with ASM and GFX, you could make a section of that world where you PLAY AS DON-DON. He should move a bit slower, not jump as high, but be able to take one more hit than Mario and have permanent fireballs or something. (See a few posts down for the idea of making Don-Don a bigger part of the plot) Keep it up! |

Posted by Treeki Use a yellow shell (wait 'til it moves by itself) to get the key. ____________________ |

Posted by Scrooge Mc Duck IceGoom is still hacking the game as far as we know, although I'm pretty sure he took a break after releasing the demo. |

OK! Thank you for this information! And it would be possible to have the very first version of the hack, that with the graphics of SMW redrawn :

Part of what made the hack so good was how each level felt very different, and wasn't Generic Level 1, Filler Level, etc. |

This isn't cancelled by any means. I've made several changes since the demo, just nothing major enough I want to post screens. (No finished new levels) For the past week or so, though, I've actually been working on world 2 of my NSMB remake. Ha ha! As if anyone cares about that project. Oh well.
Aw... my old title screen. That's still in my screenshots section as a current image, isn't it? Wow, I really need to update my website. I don't even have a download link to the demo there. SMW Redrawn graphics are kind of ugly to me now and I wouldn't want to go back to them. You're welcome to insert them into Lost World on your own, if you want. (That would kind of be a lot of work going back and undoing the ExGFX for each level) |

I like the graphics of SMW redrawn, that gives a small retro side.
You are going to continue the remake of NSMB??!! It is cool that! |
