Whoever invented the memory card was a moron, I swear to got it has to be the worst invention since the pet rock and those cup holder things McDonalds uses that always spill over.
My first gripe with memory cards is the size, they make them so small they only hold about 15 or 16 games. They can make flash memory sticks now up to 4 GB in size now, why the hell didn't they increase the memory card sizes as the prices of flash memory went down? 8~16 MB of space? Give me a break! That's the most pathetic amount of space i've ever heard of. My second gripe is the random times that you get your data corrupted for no obvious reason at all. I'm thinking Sony never made any standard library for reading and writing to the memory card because it appears the game developers are left to figure that task out themselves. My third gripe is constantly running out of space and having to go through which games I don't want anymore and having to delete them. What if I want to go back some day and play that game? Either way I'm just pissed off my Soul Calibur 3 game I worked so hard on got corrupted along with my DDR Extreme game. And the fact that my memory card constantly runs out of space. |

Well, when the PS2 was released, the usual memory size of MP3 players and flash memory in general was considerably lower than today.
I don't own a PS2, but that issue with too small memory cards already occured for the first playstation. Think about it, that most games use either one or two blocks; totals in an average of 7-8 games per memory card, until it is full. So, the person needs to buy a new memory card from Sony, or has to get one of the cheaper third party memory cards. At least for the PS1 it was never possible to have more than 15 blocks available at once; I think those multi-slot (several "slots" with 15 blocks each) only could be switched to one set each - so it is basically several memory cards in one instead of one giant one, with for example 60 blocks. It might be really the architecture, which doesn't permit the console's firmware/hardware/whatever to go beyond that hardcoded (?) maximum. So in general I think it's just economy. And although I still like Sony's playstations, it is one of those companies which always has horrendous prices for every piece not included in the original box of your device you bought (cameras, consoles and such). Okay, Memory Sticks got cheaper, but still ... similar to Apple with their iPods. An AC adapter is not included when you buy one. People WILL buy memory cards if they have several games - and you can raise the price high enough. They still will buy it, as they might get annoyed as you - why should they use huge memory cards, if smaller ones just do it, since there will be "need" to buy more and more over time ... This thing with dying memory cards never occured to me (used third-party cards), but friends had these issues too. If I am not mistaken, flash memory usually survives several hundred thousands read/write operations - but just make it fail once - everything is lost. |

I like the way Wii handled it, where you can hande SD cards as memory cards, which is widely used by other devices. And it have inbuilt memory too.
...you still need Gamecube memory card for the gamecube games on it for technical reasons though. Oh well. It's not the idea of memory card being bad, more like the implementation. :/ ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Posted by DarthRiko Posted by Xeon He is very clearly talking about the PS2 there, particularly when he complained about Sony. Think twice next time before putting your foot in your mouth, please? I don't have much experience with Sony's memory cards. Only systems I have that use memory cards exclusively are the DreamCast and the Gamecube, each of which handled them pretty well, although the DC had very little storage on theirs. I'm forced to agree with Ailure's final statement. Especially given that CDs/DVDs can't really store save games on them, and leaving the saves console-bound is a bit shortsighted, to say the least. |

Posted by XeonIf there was no Memory Card, the PSX would need to have some nvram inside it (back in 1994 hdds had like, 50mb at most? I'm not sure but putting a hdd inside a videogame was completely out of question). It'd probably have only a capacity of 512kb. Same for the Saturn, although I think the saturn had some internal memory. Posted by XeonHardware limitations. Back in 2000, 8mb Memory Card was a lot. Also, it's not entirely's sony's fault for making them "small". The programmers probably don't care enough to make the games occupy as little space as possible (explain to me why a FF10 save takes 64kb, or a burnout save takes 300kb). Posted by XeonCorrupted data never happened to me. What did happen though was my second Memory Card for psx stopped working on the bios. The saves were there, I just couldn't see them. I had to use use a game to check what was in the Memory Card (Wild Arms did that). That Memory Card wasnt official, too. Also, I have the official ps2 dev manuals and I'm pretty sure there are routines for the Memory Card. Posted by XeonYou have 3 options: - Transfer your saves to a hd. I have a hd inside my ps2 so all I have to do is use uLaunchELF - Buy new Memory Cards. Hell they're not so expensive. Back in PSX days I had 6 512kb Memory Cards (15 blocks) and 1 with 8mb. Just like you buy CDs/DVDs to burn stuff when you run out of space on your computer, you have to buy Memory Cards for the ps2. Posted by XeonIf that happened to me, I'd use CodeBreaker I guess. And download some save files off the internet. |

Posted by Skreeny This thread is about Memory Cards, if he wanted the discussion to be limited to Sony, he should have put it in the title, my statement was on-topic, and relevant. |

One of the few data corruptions I've had was Final Fantasy VII. And I can reasonably confirm it wasn't due to the memory card because no other save on there was affected.
Speaking of memory... I actually had to buy this current PSP, because the first one of mine which I'd later got rid of, would not read any Memory Stick Pro Duo. Although I'm still limited when it comes to using downloaded ISOs (custom firmware) since a few games are bigger than 1GB even if trimmed or compressed. Yeah, Saturn did feature built in storage. Not reliable long-term since it used a battery to keep active power. ____________________ |

It probably had something to do with game rentals. You get the same game you played the other day but you can't get the same copy with your game save. ____________________ Marry off the poptart, I was strutting my horse. Streisand died in Mordor, It's I, yes I, the cyclopse, lol. |

Posted by DarthRikoPosted by Skreeny He was complaining about Sony's crappy products and you thought Nintendo's well-designed Gamecube memory card was the same thing. You called him a moron for Sony's failure. On topic, I've never had this problem... or used an official Sony memory card xD ____________________ we're currently experiencing some technical difficulties |

You don't get it do you.
You were calling him a moron simply because Nintendo's memory cards are better than Sony's. Now can we stop bickering over bullshit and get our asses back on topic? Or do you just have to keep fueling the fire? ____________________ we're currently experiencing some technical difficulties |

I've had only one or two memory card mishaps ever, it was on Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and randomly my Chao Gardens were whipped clean, not just once but twice. ____________________ Why are you reading this? My post is up there^ |

I remember when I first played and Xbox and asked about memory cards and stuff, builtin wooooooooooooooooooooo!
I personally don't have a Wii, but that's awesome too. I'd much rather use an SD card, USB flash drive or something. Much better with pricing and space. But they're trying to make propriety products so they can make money off them. It's all logical business. As far as corruptions or anything, I'd had like two with my PS2 back when it first came out, don't really remember about PS1. |

My friend Alex also had a corruption problem with Soul Calibur 3...and so did I. I had no problems with my PS2, but having my memory card in his PS2 was when the message came up. I assumed it was just his PS2 that was the reason the data went corrupt.
My Gamecube memory card works fine. I do think it would be nice to increase space..but it doesn't seem like a problem to me. |

Hmm, aren't there pirate memory cards who uses compression and also reports more space than they actually have, causing corruption when they are 'full'? ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org
