I've installed and reinstalled XP on this computer 2-3 times total. I partitioned 15 gb for the C:/ to use and each time the space has gone down by a considerable amount. I'm assuming that with each installation, the old files were not replaced(since I did not want to remove my old documents). Is there a way to remove the old installation files and keep my configurations as well as my documents on my other partition?

To keep things as simple as possible, I would just move everything I want to keep to a different storage device, wipe and format the hard drive, and then start completely anew. I'm sure you've thought of that option, though.

Yea well I'm right now just looking for options that don't require extra money.

Check you hard drive and see what kinds of folders are on there. If there are folders with similar contents to the WINDOWS folder, something will be able to be deleted. (A folder named something like WINXP comes to mind...) I had a WINDOWS folder as well as a WINXP folder at one point, but I only needed one of them.

You should just buy a new hard drive....they are so cheap now it's not even funny. You can get a 300 GB for under a 80 bucks.

But things that might take up space are if the old XP installation folders weren't deleted. Also try clearing your temporary internet files as those can take up immense amounts of data. You can also delete temporary files in Disk Cleanup.

Also note that the Recycle Bin takes away 10% of your drive space, and System Restore also may take up to 12% of your drive.

The Microsoft format utilities have a known bug where they might somehow preserve old files. Just run DBAN on the disk or partition with a simple wipe of 0s, and there won't be any possible way for software to recover the data.

Chungy, it seems like you know what you're talking about but I don't. I'm not looking for a full system wipe by the way. What do you mean by "a simple wipe of 0s"? or "any possible way for software to recover the data". I'm not considering buying a new hard drive right now or freeing up all the space on my computer.

If I had to guess, the "simple wipe of 0s" would be to delete all the data and then overwrite where it was with straight 0s so there'd be nothing left to recover.

Naturally, I don't think that's quite what you're looking for.
